Randell Prep Table Error Code LO / Lo: Low Temperature Alarm

LO on the Carel controller, or Lo on the Danfoss, is the low temperature alarm on Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 prep tables. The cabinet has dropped below its low alarm limit. Check pan temperature, move delicate items such as greens away from the coldest area, and call us if LO continues.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the table runs, but product can freeze and be wasted until the cause is fixed.

What does Randell error code LO mean?

A prep table should hold food cold but not frozen, and the controller has a low limit to warn when the cabinet goes too far. When the temperature falls below that limit, the display shows LO on the Carel controller and Lo on the Danfoss. A cabinet that is too cold can freeze lettuce, tomatoes and sauces in the pans, which spoils texture and wastes product even though nothing has warmed. The manual points to four places: the control probe reading, the set point and alarm limits, whether the compressor output switches off, and product placed against the cold air outlet. Often the cause is a probe reading that is off, a changed setting or an output that does not switch the compressor off. The probe case is subtle, because a probe that reads too warm makes the controller keep cooling long after the food has reached temperature. The product case is the easiest to check, since pans or boxes pressed against the cold air outlet will freeze even when the controller is working correctly.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 series prep tables, with the Carel controller showing LO and the Danfoss controller showing Lo.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • LO or Lo on the display
  • Frozen lettuce, tomatoes or sauces
  • Ice crystals on pans near the back
  • A compressor that runs past set point

Possible causes

Listed in Randell's documentation

  • Control probe reading wrong
  • Set point or alarm limits changed
  • Compressor output that does not switch off
  • Product pressed against the cold air outlet

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code LO on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Probe knocked loose so it reads warmer than the well really is
  • Set point lowered during cleaning
  • Relay that sticks closed and keeps the compressor on

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the pan temperature with a thermometer.
  2. Move delicate items, such as greens, away from the coldest area.
  3. Make sure nothing is pressed against the back wall of the well.
  4. If LO continues, note the set point shown on the controller and the pan temperature, and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code LO

  1. Read the display and confirm Carel LO or Danfoss Lo.
  2. Compare pan temperature with the controller reading.
  3. Review the set point and alarm limits.
  4. Check the control probe position and resistance.
  5. Watch whether the compressor output switches off at set point.
  6. Correct the setting, probe or output and confirm the cabinet holds temperature.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Testing the compressor output means measuring on a control circuit that carries line voltage.
  • Checking the probe against a reference needs a meter and a resistance chart.
  • Changing alarm limits in the controller can hide a real problem if it is done without the table's own data.

How error code LO differs from similar codes

LO and Lo are the low alarm on two controllers. HI and Hi are the high alarm on the same two.

LOQuestions about Randell error code LO
Why is LO on one table and Lo on another?

Carel controllers show LO and Danfoss controllers show Lo, but the alarm is the same.

Can a full load cause LO?

A tightly packed well can block airflow, but a very cold reading is more often a setting, probe or output.

Is frozen food safe?

Frozen greens may be safe but spoiled in texture. Judge it by your own food safety rules.
