Randell Prep Table Error Code uLi: Line Voltage Too Low

ULi means the line voltage is too low on a Randell 8000-290 or 9000W-290 prep table with the Danfoss controller. The controller blocks the compressor until the supply returns to within 10 percent of the nameplate. Check the food temperature, do not use an extension cord, and ask an electrician to check the supply.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the compressor is blocked, so the table may not cool until the supply is corrected.

What does Randell error code ULi mean?

A compressor starting on low voltage draws extra current and strains its motor. To prevent damage, the Danfoss controller monitors the supply, and when it falls below the safe range it shows uLi and does not let the compressor run. The table is not cooling while the alarm is on, so food can warm. The manual puts the safe window at within 10 percent of the nameplate voltage. A weak circuit, a long extension cord or another heavy load on the same line are the common reasons. The listed causes are supply voltage at the outlet sagging below the safe range, other heavy loads on the same circuit pulling voltage down, a worn outlet or wiring that drops voltage under load, and a controller voltage reading that is slightly off. The pattern to watch for is timing: if uLi appears when a dishwasher, oven or another large load starts, the circuit is the problem. If it appears at random with nothing else running, the outlet, the wiring or the reading itself is more likely. The table can recover without help once voltage returns.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 series prep tables with the Danfoss controller, such as the 8148N-290 and 9148W-290. The safe range is within 10 percent of the nameplate voltage.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • ULi on the Danfoss display
  • The compressor held off from starting
  • Warming pans while the cabinet is powered
  • The alarm appearing when other equipment starts

Possible causes

Listed in Randell's documentation

  • Supply voltage at the outlet sagging below the safe range
  • Other heavy loads on the same circuit pulling voltage down
  • A worn outlet or wiring that drops voltage under load
  • A controller voltage reading that is slightly off

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code ULi on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Table plugged into a long run shared with a dish machine or oven
  • Outlet with burned contacts that loses voltage under load
  • Summer peak demand lowering voltage at the building

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Write down uLi and note when it began.
  2. Probe the food with a thermometer and move it to another cooler if it climbs.
  3. Unplug nothing that is not yours, and do not use an extension cord with the table.
  4. Ask an electrician to check the supply, and tell them what else was running when uLi began.

How a technician diagnoses error code ULi

  1. Read the display and confirm uLi.
  2. Measure voltage at the outlet with the table idle and while it tries to start.
  3. Repeat with neighboring heavy equipment running.
  4. Inspect the outlet, plug and cord for heat damage and loose contacts.
  5. Check the circuit size and what else it carries.
  6. Compare the controller reading with the meter, and replace the controller only if the supply is proven good.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Voltage drop under load can only be measured with a meter on a live circuit.
  • Burned outlet contacts and shared circuits are an electrical job with fire risk.
  • If the supply is good, the controller must be checked against a calibrated meter before it is replaced.

How error code ULi differs from similar codes

ULi is low line voltage and uHi is high line voltage. The cause lies in the power supply for both.

ULiQuestions about Randell error code ULi
Why does an extension cord matter?

A long or thin cord adds voltage drop, which is a common way to get uLi.

Will the table restart on its own?

It should once the voltage returns to range, though the cause may repeat.

Is the compressor damaged?

The controller is stopping it to prevent damage, so the alarm itself is a protection.
