Randell Prep Table Error Code E02: S2 Sensor Failure
E02 means the S2 sensor has failed on a Randell 8000-290 or 9000W-290 prep table with the Danfoss controller. Write the code down, take a pan temperature with a thermometer, and keep the lids closed to hold the cold. Call us, since the owner's manual says to contact service.
Medium: the table can keep cooling, but part of its control information is missing.

What does Randell error code E02 mean?
The Danfoss controller on these prep tables reads several sensors, and S2 is the second input. If the controller can no longer read it, E02 appears on the display. Losing the reading means the controller loses part of the picture it needs to run cooling and defrost. The owner's manual says to contact service, and it does not list a user reset. What S2 watches depends on how your table is built, so one of the first things a technician does is trace where the S2 lead goes. The listed causes are the S2 sensor and its plug, the sensor wiring to the controller, the S2 input on the controller, and ice damage near the sensor. Ice damage is worth noting because a sensor lead sitting in a frosty spot can be pulled or cracked by repeated freeze and thaw. A table showing E02 often still cools, which can make the code easy to ignore, but the controller is working with less information than it was designed to have.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 series prep tables with the Danfoss controller, such as the 8148N-290 and 9148W-290. Other controller generations number their sensors differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E02 on the controller display
- Pans slightly off set temperature
- Frost where the table normally stays clear
- A table that otherwise seems to run as usual
Possible causes
Listed in Randell's documentation
- S2 sensor and its plug
- Sensor wiring to the controller
- S2 input on the controller
- Ice damage near the sensor
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E02 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lead cracked by repeated freeze and thaw near the coil
- Plug partly pulled out when the unit was moved for cleaning
- Water ingress at the sensor connector
Safe checks before calling for service
- Write down E02 as displayed.
- Take a pan temperature reading with a thermometer.
- Keep the lids closed to hold the cold.
- Please do not open the compressor compartment, since this table uses a flammable refrigerant. Keep the doors shut between uses and note the model number for us.
How a technician diagnoses error code E02
- Read the code and confirm S2 is the sensor named.
- Trace the S2 lead and see which part of the table it monitors.
- Inspect the sensor and plug for ice damage and moisture.
- Test wire continuity from the sensor to the controller.
- Measure the sensor resistance at a known temperature.
- Replace the failed sensor, wire or controller, then confirm E02 clears.
- Following the sensor lead means working beside the evaporator and refrigerant lines in a table with a flammable refrigerant.
- Testing continuity and resistance needs a meter and the right resistance values for the sensor.
- A table that runs on partial information can ice up or warm slowly without telling you.
How error code E02 differs from similar codes
E02 names the S2 input. E01, E03 and E04 name S1, S3 and S4 on the same controller.

Not usually, but keep checking food temperature until it is repaired.
What does S2 monitor on my table?
That depends on the model, and we confirm it when we trace the lead.
Can I reset it?
The owner's manual lists no user reset for E02. It says to contact service.
