Randell Prep Table Error Code E03: S3 Sensor Failure

E03 means the S3 sensor has failed on a Randell 8000-290 or 9000W-290 prep table with the Danfoss controller. The table may still cool. Write the code down, check a pan near the middle of the well with a thermometer, and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the table may still cool, but it runs without one of its sensor readings.

What does Randell error code E03 mean?

Danfoss controllers on Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 prep tables have several sensor inputs, and S3 is the third. The controller uses it as part of managing the table. When the reading disappears, whether from a wire problem, a loose connector or a failed input, the display shows E03. The owner's manual says to contact service. The table may still cool, because the compressor and fans continue under the other sensors, but the controller works without the S3 reading until it is replaced. That can mean looser temperature control, a missed defrost or a protective limit that no longer works. The manual lists four places to look: the S3 sensor and its connector, the wiring from the sensor to the board, the S3 input on the controller, and moisture in the connector. Moisture in the connector deserves particular attention in a kitchen, since washdowns and condensation both reach it, and a clean dry connector will often restore the reading for a time before it fails again.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Randell 8000-290 and 9000W-290 series prep tables with the Danfoss controller, such as the 8148N-290 and 9148W-290. Carel-controlled tables use other codes for probe alarms.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E03 on the controller display
  • The table cooling but with less stable pan temperatures
  • Frost building or defrost behaving oddly
  • The code disappearing and returning

Possible causes

Listed in Randell's documentation

  • S3 sensor and its connector
  • Wiring from the sensor to the board
  • S3 input on the controller
  • Moisture in the connector

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E03 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Connector exposed to splashes when the well is washed
  • Sensor wire stretched when the table was pulled out from the wall
  • Slight corrosion on the pins that makes the reading intermittent

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Write down E03 as it appears.
  2. Use a food thermometer on a pan near the middle of the well.
  3. Keep the lids and doors closed.
  4. Please do not open the compressor compartment, since this table uses a flammable refrigerant. Write down the model number from the data plate for us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E03

  1. Read the code and confirm S3 is named.
  2. Check the pan temperature against the controller reading.
  3. Inspect the S3 sensor, connector and lead for moisture, corrosion and damage.
  4. Check wire continuity back to the board.
  5. Measure sensor resistance at a known temperature.
  6. Replace the part that fails the test, and confirm E03 stays clear after a full cycle.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The S3 connector and wiring sit beside line-voltage circuits and refrigerant lines inside the compressor section.
  • Telling a damp connector from a dead sensor requires a meter and a temperature reference.
  • Replacing parts without a test can leave the real cause in place and the code returning.

How error code E03 differs from similar codes

E03 names the S3 input. E01, E02 and E04 name the other sensors on the same Danfoss controller.

E03Questions about Randell error code E03
Will the table still keep food cold?

It may, but the controller is missing a reading, so check temperature with a thermometer.

Why would E03 come and go?

A damp or corroded connector can drop the reading briefly.

Is E03 the same as E04?

No. They name different sensor inputs, S3 and S4.
