Federal Cases and the Carel Control

Federal Industries cases are a staple of grab-and-go and self-service merchandising. We service the SSRC and ESSRC self-service cases, the vertical SSRVS and SSRPF models, and the IMSS, LPRSS, TSSM, RSSD and VRSS families. Self-contained SSRC cases use R404A, while remote models use R449, and SSRVS and SSRPF cases built after December 2019 use R449A.

A Carel electronic control with two probes, one for air and one for the evaporator coil, runs the case. It performs three defrosts a day, about every eight hours, with an on-demand defrost added. The control cuts in at 39 degrees F and cuts out between 26 and 36 degrees F, depending on the setting. E0 means the air probe has a problem, E1 means the defrost probe has one, and EE and EF mean the control cannot read its parameters.

Store Conditions and What We Test

Federal designs these cases for a store at no more than 75 degrees F and 55 percent humidity. Beyond that, performance suffers, which is common where an air conditioner is outmatched in summer. We check the condenser, shelf loading, airflow, probes and wiring, defrost termination, the condensate pan on self-contained models, and the cutout pressures on R404A cases.

For an older case, we give you an honest view of whether a repair is worth making. We write the price down first and cover our workmanship for 30 days.

FAQFederal Industries questions
What does E0 mean on my Federal case?

E0 is a problem with the air sensing probe on the Carel control. The case may cool wrongly without a good air reading. We check the probe and its wiring before replacing anything.

Why is the coil frosting on my self-service case?

The case defrosts about every eight hours and stops at 43 degrees F on the coil. If frost builds, a probe, heater or drain may be the cause. We test the defrost circuit and drain.

Do you repair older Federal cases?

Yes. We service the SSRC family and others still in use. We tell you plainly when an older case is not worth the repair, and the price is in writing first.
