What does Baxter error code E9 mean?

The OV520 watches the chamber temperature, and if it climbs to a level the control treats as dangerous, it turns the Smart Touch screen red and shows E9, Heating Error. The manual's explanation is simply high temperature detected, and it is one of the more urgent entries because its action starts with shutting off gas and/or breakers. That is a step an operator can take to stop the oven from heating further. The manual then says to contact a Baxter service technician. It does not list causes for the overheating. In general an overheat comes from heat that did not switch off, a sensor reading too low, or poor airflow, but that is our reasoning and not the manual's. The display reads Red screen: Heating Error with E9. Do not restart the oven until it has been checked.

Affected models and control systems

This code is listed for the Baxter OV520G1 and OV520G2 (gas) and OV520E1 and OV520E2 (electric) rotating rack ovens with Smart Touch control, in Operator Manual form 36764 Rev. D.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Red screen with Heating Error and E9
  • Chamber much hotter than the setpoint
  • Smell of overheated product or hot metal from the oven

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E9 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Heating not switching off because a relay or contactor is stuck on
  • Temperature sensor reading lower than the real chamber temperature
  • Convection fan or airflow reduced, so heat builds up locally

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Shut off the gas supply to the oven and switch off the oven's breakers, as the manual says.
  2. Keep people and materials away from the oven and let it cool with the door closed.
  3. Do not restart the oven or try to bake until it has been checked.
  4. Write down the time, what was baking and anything unusual about the oven before E9, for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code E9

  1. Isolate gas and power and let the chamber cool before opening anything.
  2. Read the screen history to see which codes came before E9.
  3. Check the heat control relay or gas valve for sticking or leaking by.
  4. Check the temperature sensor against a reference thermometer.
  5. Check the convection fan and airflow path.
  6. Repair the cause and verify a controlled heat-up before returning the oven to service.
! Leave this to a technician
  • An overheated oven can ignite product, grease or nearby material and cause burns.
  • Gas valves and heating relays are live and gas-carrying parts that need a qualified technician.
  • Finding why heat did not switch off needs a reference thermometer and the wiring information.

E9Questions about Baxter error code E9
Can I keep using the oven with E9?

No. The manual tells you to shut off gas and/or breakers and call a service technician.

Is E9 the same as E5?

No. E5 is a yellow screen for a tripped manual-reset high limit. E9 is a red screen for a detected dangerously high temperature.

Should I open the door to cool it?

Keep the door closed and let it cool unless you have been told otherwise, since fresh air can feed a fire.
