Convotherm Combi Oven Error Code E01.x: Not Enough Water
E01.x on a Convotherm C4 means the oven does not have enough water. Open the water connection valve or valves first, and if the error stays, contact Customer Service.
Medium: steam cooking is blocked, but the cause is often a closed valve and the oven can still do dry heat.

What does Convotherm error code E01.x mean?
A Convotherm combi oven needs water for steam, for humidity control and for cleaning, so the control keeps watching whether water is reaching it after you start a program. When the oven expects water and finds too little, it stops the steaming function and displays the message E01.x Not enough water. The x in the code tells service which water path or stage reported the shortage; the manual uses a single operator response for all of them. This is a condition check, not a part test: the control does not know whether a valve is shut, a hose is kinked or the building supply has dropped. It only knows that the amount of water it asked for has not shown up. That is why the first response in the manual is the simplest one, opening the water connection valves. Kitchens often close these valves during cleaning or maintenance and forget to open them again, so the same code can appear after a perfectly ordinary shift change.
Affected models and control systems
Convotherm 4 (C4) floor-standing combi ovens, from the UL / USA operating manual. Table-top and maxx pro units are not named in the text we read, so this page is limited to the floor-standing models.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E01.x Not enough water shown on the display
- Steam functions stop or do not start
- Combi or steam program ends early
- Hissing or filling sounds missing when steam is requested
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E01.x on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Water connection valve closed after cleaning or maintenance and not reopened
- Inlet hose kinked or crushed behind the oven
- Building water supply interrupted or at very low pressure
- Inlet screen or filter clogged with scale or debris
Safe checks before calling for service
- Open the water connection valve or valves that feed the oven, usually behind or beside the unit.
- Check that the supply hose is not kinked or crushed.
- Restart the oven and start a short steam program to see whether the message returns.
- If E01.x still appears, stop using steam functions and contact Customer Service as the manual instructs.
- Write down the full code, including what follows the E01, and what program was running when it appeared.
How a technician diagnoses error code E01.x
- Read the full E01.x code and the code history to learn which water stage reported the shortage.
- Verify water is present at the oven's inlet and measure supply pressure under flow.
- Inspect the inlet filter screen and hose, and clean or replace as needed.
- Test the water inlet valve for coil voltage and for flow when commanded on.
- Check the water level sensing path used by that code with a meter and compare it with the specification.
- Replace the valve or sensor only after the test shows it is out of range.
- Inlet valves and level sensors are wired to the control board inside the oven, which carries live line voltage and must not be probed by an operator.
- Water that does not drain or flow as expected can leak onto electrical parts, so the plumbing and the electrical checks have to be done together.
- The meaning of each E01 sub-code is service information that is read from the oven's own diagnostics.

What does the x in E01.x stand for?
It is a sub-number that tells service which water path reported the problem. The manual gives operators the same first response for every version.
Can I keep baking while E01.x is showing?
Dry hot-air cooking may still work, but steam and combi programs need water and will not run correctly until the supply is restored.
Will the message clear on its own once I open the valve?
Usually it clears once water is available and the oven is restarted. If it returns, the supply or the inlet parts need service.
