Alto-Shaam Combi Oven Error Code E04: Lower Fan Motor Error
E04 Lower Fan Motor Error means the lower convection fan on a roll-in oven did not turn within 60 seconds. Press the Start icon to acknowledge it, then have the lower motor and wheel checked if the code returns.

What does Alto-Shaam error code E04 mean?
Roll-in combi ovens have two convection fans, one high and one low, to move air through a tall cavity. The control starts each motor and waits for its Hall Effect sensor to report rotation. When the lower motor does not turn within 60 seconds, the control posts E04 Lower Fan Motor Error. The upper fan is monitored the same way under E03, so this number points specifically to the bottom of the oven. The manual's causes are a locked motor or fan wheel, a flashing LED on the motor control, and a Hall sensor that fails to detect rotation. After you press Start the oven tries to return to normal operation, but the check is repeated when the fan is next called. Because heated air moves unevenly with only one fan working, the control treats a stalled lower fan as a reason to stop rather than continue cooking.
Affected models and control systems
Roll-in versions of the CT PROformance and CT Classic combis, the sizes with a second, lower convection fan. The CT Express manual uses E04 only for its 20-20 unit.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E04 Lower Fan Motor Error on the display
- Little or no airflow from the lower part of the cavity
- Product on the bottom racks cooking slower than the top
Possible causes
Listed in Alto-Shaam's documentation
- Motor or fan wheel locked
- Motor control LED flashing
- Hall Effect sensor not detecting rotation
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A loose or cracked lower fan wheel that wobbles and rubs the baffle
- Grease buildup on the lower wheel slowing it until it fails to turn
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press the Start icon once to acknowledge E04.
- Empty the cavity and check that no pan, rack or foil has fallen toward the lower baffle.
- Let the oven cool completely, then try a short, unloaded start.
- If E04 returns, write down whether the lower fan makes any noise and call for service.
How a technician diagnoses error code E04
- Read the code and confirm this is a roll-in oven with a lower motor.
- Open the baffle and turn the lower wheel by hand to find binding or a loose hub.
- Check the motor control LED and look up its blink count in the motor control list.
- Test motor supply and the Hall sensor signal with a meter.
- Replace the lower motor, wheel or sensor only after confirming which one failed.
- The lower fan is at the bottom of a roll-in cavity, behind baffles that are heavy and hot.
- The motor drive carries live 208-240 V while its LED is read.
- Binding in the wheel can only be judged by hand once the cavity is cold.
How error code E04 differs from similar codes
E03 covers the table-top or upper motor; E04 exists only because roll-in ovens add a lower motor.

Related Alto-Shaam combi oven error codes
Which fan does E04 refer to?
The lower convection fan on roll-in ovens.
Will E04 stop the oven?
The control stops the program when the lower fan cannot prove rotation, and it will check again after Start.
What if only E03 appeared before?
Then the upper fan was the problem; E04 would mean the lower one has a separate issue.
