What does Alto-Shaam error code E216 mean?
The drive that runs the convection fan limits the current it sends to the motor. If the current goes above its safe level, the drive stops and reports over-current, and the control posts E216 VFD Over Current. The manual lists three causes: a blocked fan wheel, a VFD malfunction, or a convection motor malfunction. These are the same causes as for E213 Motor Over Current and E214 Current Peak, and the manual gives no further way to tell them apart except the blink code on the drive's LED. Start acknowledges the message and the oven tries to resume. If the fan is dragging, the current will rise again when it restarts. A wheel that turns freely by hand with the oven cold shifts suspicion toward the motor or the drive. E216 names the table-top or upper drive; its lower-drive counterpart is E226.

How a technician diagnoses error code E216
- Read the code and compare with E213 and E214 in the history.
- Check the fan wheel by hand for drag or damage.

- Measure drive output current and compare with the motor rating.
- Replace the motor or drive as the tests show.
- Current measurements are taken on live drive output.
- Insulation testing needs a megohmmeter.
- Running a motor that is overloaded can burn it.
How error code E216 differs from similar codes
