Champion Dishwasher Wash Display E: Wash Thermistor Error
E on the wash display of a Champion UH-series dishwasher means the board cannot read the wash thermistor. It may be defective, the wire may be open or broken, or a connection may be loose. Check the wiring and connection, and replace the wash thermistor if it is defective.
Medium: the machine loses its wash temperature reading, so wash heating cannot be confirmed.

What does Champion error code E mean?
The wash thermistor is a small temperature sensor in the wash tank. The display board reads its resistance to calculate the water temperature. If the board gets no usable signal, because the thermistor is defective, the wire between the thermistor and the board is open or broken, or a connection is loose, it cannot show a number and prints E. It is different from Lo and H HH, which are real temperature readings outside a range. E means the reading itself is missing. Without the wash reading, the board cannot confirm the tank is at a proper wash temperature, so the machine cannot be trusted to heat correctly. The manual's instructions are to check the thermistor wiring and connection and replace the wash thermistor if it is defective. The check is mostly about continuity and resistance of a low-voltage sensor circuit.
Affected models and control systems
UH130, UH130B, UH230, UH230B and UH330B M4 series dishwashers with the digital temperature display board; see the Digital Temperature Display Codes, printed pp. 54-57.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E in place of the wash temperature
- Wash water that seems to heat unevenly or not at all
- Display that changes between a number and E when the machine is moved or vibrates
- Dishes that do not come out clean
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Defective wash thermistor
- Open or broken wire between the thermistor and the board
- Loose connection
- A thermistor lead worn by vibration at the tank or at the plug
- Corrosion or moisture at the thermistor plug
- A harness connector on the display board that has worked loose
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the machine off and on again to see whether E clears; note whether it flickers.
- Look, without opening panels, for visible damage on any exposed wire near the tank.
- Do not run wash cycles while E is showing because the wash temperature is unverified.
- Write down whether the rinse side also reads normally and give that to the technician.
How a technician diagnoses error code E
- Read the display and confirm E is on the wash side only.
- With power off, inspect the thermistor lead and connector for breaks and corrosion.
- Measure thermistor resistance at the tank and compare it with the water temperature.
- Check continuity of the wiring between the thermistor and the display board.
- Replace the thermistor or harness only after the measurement shows the problem.
- The thermistor wiring runs inside the machine's panels near live 208 to 240 V circuits.
- A resistance test needs a meter and knowledge of the thermistor values for the board.
- A loose or open wire must be separated from a failed sensor, which a guess cannot do.
How error code E differs from similar codes
E on the wash display refers to the wash thermistor, and the identical E on the rinse display refers to the rinse thermistor.

Related Champion dish machine error codes
Does E mean the water is too hot or too cold?
Neither. It means the board has no valid wash temperature reading from the thermistor.
Will E clear after a restart?
It may if the cause is a loose connection, but a broken wire or defective thermistor will bring it back.
What is the difference between E and Lo?
Lo is a real reading below 100F. E means the reading is missing because the thermistor or its wiring has a problem.
