Baxter Rack Oven Error Code E85: Loading Door Open

E85 on a Baxter OV520 rack oven with the Smart Touch screen appears on a green screen and means the loading door needs to be closed. Close it fully and make sure it latches, check nothing on the rack or cart holds it open, and see whether the screen clears. If E85 stays with the door closed, call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: an operator prompt that clears once the loading door closes.

What does Baxter error code E85 mean?

A rack oven moves heat and steam around a chamber that the loading door seals, so the control insists that the door is shut before it carries on with its cycle. A door switch watches the door and a target on the door closes that switch. When the screen shows E85 on green, it is asking the baker for the door: the oven will not carry on while the door shows as open. This is the plain reading and it is correct most of the time. A rack pushed in slightly crooked, a cart handle, or a latch not fully caught can all keep the door off the switch. If the door really is closed and E85 stays, the switch, its target, or the door hinge may be the cause. The manual's list covers whether the loading door is fully closed and latched, the switch position and its target, hinge wear that holds the door slightly open, and the switch wiring and control input.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Baxter OV520 rack ovens with the Smart Touch touchscreen, such as the OV520G1, OV520G2, OV520E1 and OV520E2. Other Baxter controls use different messages.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • A green screen with E85 interrupts the bake
  • The oven pauses its cycle after the rack is loaded
  • The message stays with the door apparently shut
  • The screen clears only when the door is pushed hard

Possible causes

Listed in Baxter's documentation

  • Loading door not fully closed or latched
  • Door switch out of position or its target misaligned
  • Door hinge worn so the door sits slightly open
  • Switch wiring or control input failed

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E85 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A rack handle or cart bumper that sits a few millimeters inside the door line
  • A door hinge that has sagged with age so the target no longer reaches the switch
  • A switch target loosened by repeated door slams during loading

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Close the loading door fully and make sure it latches.
  2. Check that nothing on the rack or cart is holding it open.
  3. Look at whether the screen clears.
  4. Do not hold the door shut by hand while the oven runs.
  5. If E85 stays with the door closed, note how the door sits and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E85

  1. Read the screen and confirm the door closes and latches.
  2. Check the hinge for wear and the door for sag.
  3. Inspect the switch and its target alignment.
  4. Test the switch with a meter as the door closes.
  5. Check the wiring and the control input.
  6. Adjust or replace the hinge, target or switch as the test shows.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The door switch and hinge sit on a hot, heavy oven door.
  • Adjusting a hinge safely means supporting the door.
  • Bridging the switch removes a safety check.
