What does Alto-Shaam error code E48 mean?
Sensing point 3 of the multipoint core probe B10 has its own line to the control board. The control expects that line to carry a temperature signal and to be isolated from ground. If it sees a short to ground, it posts E48 B10 - Point 3 Fault. The manual's only listed cause is a probe that is miswired or has malfunctioned. Cables take the most abuse, since a probe cord is pulled, bent and often caught in a door, so a pinched cable is a common route to a short. The code differs from E28, where point 3 is open or defective. Pressing Start acknowledges the message and the oven then tries to return to normal operation, but a short does not heal, so the control reports the probe again whenever it is used. A technician measures the third line against ground to confirm whether the probe or the oven wiring carries the short.

- A strain-relief failure at the handle end where the third wire touches the shield
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press the Start icon once to acknowledge E48.
- Inspect the cable along its whole length for flat spots or nicks.
- Plug the probe back in after drying the contacts.
- If E48 returns, do not use the probe and cook by time until it is tested.
How a technician diagnoses error code E48
- Read the code and see which other point codes were logged.
- Look over the probe cable, handle and plug.
- Meter line 3 to ground with the probe disconnected.
- Test the oven receptacle wiring for a short to the chassis.
- Replace the probe if the short follows it.
- Finding a short means isolating wires with a meter.
- The receptacle ties into the live control wiring.
- The probe checks food safety and should be accurate.
How error code E48 differs from similar codes
E28 is point 3 open or defective, while E48 is point 3 shorted to ground; E46, E47 and E49 are points 1, 2 and 4.
