Electrolux Washer Extractor Error Code 16: Timeout Heating
Error code 16 means heating ran longer than the HEATING TIMEOUT, SEC value stored in Config 2. Check that the machine is heating normally and that the drain is not leaking while it heats. If it repeats, a technician should check the heating and the drain valve.
Medium: hot programs cannot finish, but the machine is otherwise intact and cold cycles may still run.

- Compass Control washer-extractors (CPU board, motor control, DLCU)
What does Electrolux Professional error code 16 mean?
Besides watching how fast the water warms, the CPU board runs an overall timer on every heating step. The limit is the HEATING TIMEOUT, SEC value in Config 2. If the water has not reached its target before that time runs out, the board stops the step and shows ERROR 016 / TIMEOUT HEATING. The manual points to one cause worth knowing: a leaking drain. When water keeps leaving and the machine keeps refilling, the new cold water defeats the temperature gradient check and the heating never catches up, so the overall timer is the check that finally trips. A weak heater can produce the same message. Operators see a program that sits at the heating step for a long time and then stops, with the water only lukewarm.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the W465H-W4300H, W475S-W4330S and W475N-W4330N washer-extractors, Type W3..., with the Compass Control. The timeout limit comes from the Config 2 setting for the machine, so the time before the message appears differs between sites.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Display shows ERROR 016 / TIMEOUT HEATING
- Water takes very long to warm and never reaches target
- Program stops after a long wait at the heating step
- Repeated small fills during the heating step
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 16 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Drain valve leaking so heated water runs out and cold water refills
- Heating element or contactor weak, so the rise is slow but not stopped
- Temperature target set high for a heavy load with cold supply water
Safe checks before calling for service
- Look at the drain outlet during heating to see whether water is running out while the drum should hold it.
- Try a lower temperature or a smaller load to see if the cycle completes.
- Check that the supply is not unusually cold or that a cold valve is not left open.
- Note the program, the target temperature and whether the water level dropped, then call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code 16
- Read the code and note the program and target temperature.
- Watch the level and the drain valve during heating for leakage or repeated refills.
- Check the heater element, its supply and the heater contactor.
- Check the HEATING TIMEOUT, SEC value in Config 2 against the program.
- Replace the leaking drain valve or the weak heater part after testing.
- Config 2 values are changed in the machine's own service menu and must match the machine.
- The heater circuit runs on high-current line voltage and is tested with the machine isolated.
- A leaking drain valve needs a look under load with the tub open to the drain.
How error code 16 differs from similar codes
Code 16 is the overall heating timer; code 08 is the slow temperature rise check.

Is it the same as code 08?
No. Code 08 looks at how fast the temperature climbs, while this code trips when the whole heating step runs too long.
Can a leaking drain cause it?
Yes. The manual says repeated refills defeat the gradient check, so heating never catches up.
Can I raise the timeout to make it go away?
That only hides the problem. The timeout setting should stay as the machine requires.
