What does Eversys error code E-013 mean?

The brewing unit is where an Eversys machine actually makes the coffee, and the control must be able to reach it before it will start any drink. If the contact is lost, the display stays on and shows E-013, but coffee products stop at once. It tells you about the connection between the brewing unit and the board: the plug and cable, or the board input for the brewing unit. It does not mean the coffee itself, the beans or the brewing chamber has a problem. The maker lists wear on the cable where it flexes, because the brewing unit moves, and a cable that bends each cycle can wear at the point it bends. Moisture or coffee dust at the connector is the other likely thing in a cafe, since fine grounds work into everything. Staff can look at the grounds drawer and make sure it is seated, and check that no cup or tray is leaning on the machine, since pressure on the housing can disturb a connection. After that the right move is to keep hands out of the brewing area. The brewing unit has moving parts, and the cable runs right alongside them.

Affected models and control systems

Eversys Cameo, Enigma and Shotmaster machines, as listed in the maker's E-xxx operator error messages.

Possible causes

Listed in Eversys's documentation

  • Loose or damaged brewing unit plug or cable
  • Failed board input for the brewing unit
  • Cable worn where it flexes
  • Moisture or coffee dust at the connector

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E-013 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A cable strand broken inside the jacket at the flex point, so the signal drops out when the unit moves
  • Fine coffee dust packed into the plug that keeps the pins from seating

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Look at the grounds drawer and make sure it is seated, with no cup or tray leaning on the machine.
  2. Turn the main switch off, count to ten, then turn it back on one time.
  3. See whether the message comes straight back at start-up.
  4. If it does, keep the machine off and ring us. Hands stay out of the brewing area.
  5. Tell us whether the message came at start-up or mid-service.

How a technician diagnoses error code E-013

  1. Confirm E-013 and note whether it appears at start-up or after the brewing unit moves.
  2. With power off, inspect the brewing unit plug and cable along its flex path.
  3. Clean the connector of coffee dust and reseat it.
  4. Test continuity through the cable while flexing it.
  5. Test the board input for the brewing unit.
  6. Replace the cable or board part that tests bad and run test coffees.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The brewing unit has moving parts and a cable that flexes beside them.
