Eversys Coffee Machine Error Code W-020: Top Piston Failure
W-020 reports a top piston failure in the brewing unit. The machine tries to unblock it automatically, so let it finish. If W-020 repeats, call us and do not reach into the brewing area.
Medium: a warning that may clear itself, but repeats can lead to a blocked unit that stops coffee.

What does Eversys error code W-020 mean?
Inside the brewing unit, a top piston presses the coffee bed and a bottom piston pushes the used puck out. The control watches the top piston's movement, and when it does not move as expected it reports W-020. Before giving up, the machine automatically tries to unblock the piston, which may show as a short delay in drinks. If the self-clearing works, the warning goes away and drinks flow again, so staff can usually tell it has passed. If it does not work, the unit needs a look. The message names the top piston only, not the cause. Grounds that have built up around the piston, a motor that is not delivering enough force, or a supply problem to the motor can all hold the piston back. The result of the automatic attempt is part of the story, which is why operators should not interrupt it. Reaching into the unit is unsafe because the pistons are driven by a motor. W-020 is related to W-022 for the bottom piston, W-011 for initialization and S-020 for a fully blocked unit. A repeat of the warning is the time to call. The display text is W-020.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Eversys Cameo with W-xxx warning messages. W-022 is the bottom piston counterpart.

- Top piston stuck in the brewing unit
- Grounds build-up around the piston
- Piston motor or its supply failing
- Automatic unblock attempt not succeeding
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code W-020 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Coffee oil that has hardened on the piston guide and adds drag
- A seal around the piston that has swollen and grips the bore
Safe checks before calling for service
- Let the machine finish its automatic attempt and do not interrupt it.
- Note whether the warning clears by itself.
- Make sure the grounds drawer is not overfull.
- A repeat of W-020 is the time to call us. Do not reach into the brewing area, and tell us how often it appears.
How a technician diagnoses error code W-020
- Read the history for how often W-020 appeared and whether S-020 followed.
- Power down and inspect the unit and the top piston.
- Move the piston by hand where possible and feel for binding.
- Test the motor current and supply.
- Clean grounds and oil from the guide and seals.
- Replace the motor or seals only after they fail the test.
- The brewing unit's pistons are motor-driven, and a hand inside can be crushed.
- Moving the piston by hand and measuring motor current needs the unit removed and the power isolated.
- A repeat of the warning means wear, which only shows up once the unit is cleaned and inspected.

Should I press anything when W-020 appears?
No. Let the machine finish its automatic attempt to unblock the piston.
Is W-020 the same as W-022?
No. W-020 is the top piston and W-022 is the bottom piston of the same unit.
It cleared itself. Do I need a technician?
Not at once, but if it keeps coming back, the piston or its motor needs inspection.
