Frymaster 3000 Fryer Error Code E04: HI 2 Bad

HI 2 BAD (E04) on a Frymaster OCF30 series electric fryer with the 3000 controller means the high-limit reading is out of range. The manual says to check the high-limit thermostat, the interface board and the controller. Do not fry until it is checked.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the high-limit safety circuit reading is out of range, so the fryer should not be used.

What does Frymaster error code E04 HI 2 BAD mean?

A fryer has two temperature safeguards: the probe that regulates the oil and the high-limit that cuts off heat if the oil gets too hot. The 3000 controller monitors the high-limit circuit as well. When the high-limit reading is out of range, the controller logs E04 and shows HI 2 BAD. It means the safety circuit is not reporting a believable value. The manual lists three causes: a failed controller, a failed interface board, or an open high-limit thermostat. An open thermostat, the simplest of these, can stop the signal in the same way as a failed board. Because the high-limit is the device that stands between the oil and a runaway temperature, the fryer should not be used while its reading is out of range. The service steps are to check the thermostat, then the interface board, then the controller.

Affected models and control systems

OCF30 series electric fryers (FPEL30 series) with the 3000 controller. The same code is in the 3000/3010 Controller Operation Manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • HI 2 BAD on the controller
  • Alarm and a fryer that stops heating
  • No oil temperature rise on start
  • Message returns after a restart

Possible causes

Listed in Frymaster's documentation

  • Failed controller
  • Failed interface board
  • Open high-limit thermostat

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E04 HI 2 BAD on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A high-limit thermostat that has tripped open and not reset
  • A connector on the high-limit wiring that has worked loose from heat cycles
  • Heat damage to the wiring near the high-limit sensing point

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the fryer off and let the oil cool completely.
  2. Do not try to bypass or reset anything inside the cabinet.
  3. Restart once cool and note whether HI 2 BAD returns.
  4. Record the vat and give the code to the technician.

How a technician diagnoses error code E04 HI 2 BAD

  1. Read E04 and the error log and note related codes such as E05 or E06.
  2. Check the high-limit thermostat for continuity with power locked out.
  3. Inspect the wiring between the thermostat and the interface board.
  4. Test the interface board output and input for the high-limit signal.
  5. Replace the thermostat, board or controller only after the measurements isolate the failed one.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The high-limit is a safety device and its testing must follow the electrical procedure with power locked out.
  • Interface board and controller tests are on live electric-fryer wiring at 208 to 240 V.
  • Mistaking a tripped high-limit for a failed board means a costly part replaced for nothing.

How error code E04 HI 2 BAD differs from similar codes

E04 is the high-limit reading being out of range; E05 is the high-limit temperature actually going past its limit.

E04 HI 2 BADQuestions about Frymaster error code E04 HI 2 BAD
Is HI 2 BAD the same as an overheated fryer?

No. It says the high-limit reading is out of range. Whether the oil is actually too hot is shown by E05.

Can I reset it?

Turn the fryer off and on once after it cools. If the code returns, the thermostat, board or controller needs testing.

Is it safe to cook with the code showing?

No. The safety circuit is not reading correctly, so stop frying until it is checked.
