Frymaster 3000 Fryer Error Code E17: Error ATO Probe
ERROR ATO PROBE (E17) on a Frymaster OCF30 series electric fryer with the 3000 controller means the ATO RTD reading is out of range. The manual says to call service to check the ATO probe and harness. Automatic top-off cannot be trusted until then.
Medium: automatic top-off is unreliable, but the manual does not order a shutdown.
What does Frymaster E17 ERROR ATO PROBE mean?
ATO stands for auto top-off, the feature that adds oil to keep the vat at the right level. It uses an RTD, a temperature probe whose resistance changes with temperature, and the controller expects its reading to stay inside a valid range. When it goes out of range, the controller logs E17 and shows ERROR ATO PROBE. Since the controller cannot read the probe, it cannot decide when to top off, and it cannot trust the level information. The manual says to call service to check the ATO probe and harness. A damaged lead, a corroded connector or a probe that has failed can all give an out-of-range reading. This is a different message from E08, which is about the ATO board. If both appear, the board connection is the better place to start. The fryer may continue to heat while the oil level is watched by hand.

What you may notice
- ERROR ATO PROBE on the controller
- Oil level not topped off automatically
- Alarm sounding
- Message coming back after restart
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind E17 ERROR ATO PROBE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A probe cable damaged near the vat or the cabinet door hinge
- Oil or moisture inside the probe connector
- A probe that has failed open or shorted
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check the oil level by eye and top up by hand if it is low.
- Turn the fryer off and on once to see whether the message clears.
- Do not touch the probe or harness.
- Note whether the message came with E08 and give it to the technician.
How a technician diagnoses E17 ERROR ATO PROBE
- Read the error log and note whether E08 also appears.
- With power off, inspect the ATO probe and its harness.
- Measure the probe resistance and compare it with the manual values.
- Test the harness for opens and shorts.
- Replace the probe or harness after a measurement and run a top-off to confirm.
- Probe and harness tests require a meter and the manual's resistance values.
- The probe sits in the vat area with hot oil and live heating wiring close by.
- Choosing between probe, harness and board needs measurements, not guesses.
How E17 ERROR ATO PROBE differs from similar codes
E17 is the ATO probe reading out of range; E08 is the connection to the ATO board or the board failing.

Can I keep frying with E17?
Yes in the sense that heating continues, but you must watch the oil level yourself, since automatic top-off is not reliable.
Is E17 the same as E08?
No. E17 is the probe. E08 is the ATO board connection or board.
Will a restart fix E17?
Only if a connector was briefly disturbed. A failed probe will bring it back.
