IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E db: Drive Balance Switch

E db on an IPSO CHM495R F-speed washer-extractor means the VFD balance switch input was closed at the start of a drain, so the control believes the basket is unbalanced. Power off to clear it, spread the load evenly once the lock releases, and run it again.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the cycle stops at drain or spin, but a rebalanced load often clears it.

What does IPSO error code E db mean?

An F-speed IPSO washer-extractor spins its basket fast, so a load packed to one side can shake the whole machine. A balance switch senses that motion and tells the drive. The control reads the switch at the start of a drain, and if the VFD balance switch input is closed at that moment, it takes the basket to be out of balance, stops the cycle, and shows E db. This code applies to F-speed models only. Staff see a halt at drain or spin with a lopsided load in the drum. The manual's step is to remove power to clear it. A badly packed load is the usual reason, such as one heavy item or a rolled sheet on one side. A switch that sticks or sits out of adjustment can post the code with a good load, and worn suspension parts, loose mounting or a wiring problem between the drive and the switch can do the same.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to F-speed IPSO washer-extractors in the CHM495R family, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control in that programming manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The machine stops at drain or the start of spin and shows E db
  • The load sits heavily on one side of the drum
  • The cabinet shakes before the stop

Possible causes

Listed in IPSO's documentation

  • Unevenly packed load that tilts the basket at drain
  • Balance switch stuck closed or out of adjustment
  • Worn suspension parts or loose mounting letting the drum sway
  • Wiring problem between the drive and the balance switch

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E db on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A single heavy item, such as a rug, that settles on one side as water leaves
  • A switch plunger fouled with lint so it stays closed after the drum settles

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Remove power from the machine to wipe the message, as the manual says.
  2. After the lock releases, spread the load evenly.
  3. Run the cycle again with a better balanced load.
  4. Call us if E db keeps coming back, and note whether the load was balanced.

How a technician diagnoses error code E db

  1. Read the code and confirm the machine is an F-speed model.
  2. Run a test load that is evenly distributed and watch whether E db returns.
  3. Check the balance switch for sticking and for correct adjustment.
  4. Inspect the suspension and mounting for wear and looseness with the power locked off.
  5. Test the wiring between the drive and the switch before replacing the switch.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Adjusting the balance switch and checking the suspension means working around a heavy basket and its drive.
  • The switch wiring joins the drive, which carries live voltage and can hold stored charge.
  • Telling a bad load from a bad switch or tired suspension takes a test run and measurements.

How error code E db differs from similar codes

E db is the VFD balance switch input at the start of a drain. E FS is the frame balance switch found open.

E dbQuestions about IPSO error code E db
Can a bad load really cause E db?

Yes. An uneven load is the most common reason, which is why the first step is to spread the load evenly.

Will it clear itself?

Powering down clears the message, but it returns if the cause remains.

Does every model show E db?

No. The manual says it applies to F-speed models only.
