IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E dr: Drain Alarm
E dr on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is a drain alarm: the programmed water level was not reached within 15 minutes of a drain step. Cut power to clear it, check the floor drain for a backup, and expect water when the lock releases.
Medium: the cycle stops with water in the drum, and the load stays wet until the drain is restored.
What does IPSO error code E dr mean?
During a drain step the control expects the water level to fall to the programmed point. It gives the drain 15 minutes to do that. If the level has not come down in that time, the control raises the alarm and shows E dr. Staff see a drum full of water that never empties and a load that will not spin. A drain valve that stays shut or opens only part way is one reason, a blocked drain line or floor drain that holds the water back is another, and a level sensor that never reports the drum as empty is a third. A drain time or valve setting that was changed is also on the list. The manual treats cutting power as the reset. Because the drum may be full when the door lock lets go, it is wise to be ready for water on the floor. If the building drain backs up for other machines too, the problem lies outside this washer.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to IPSO washer-extractors in the CHM495R family, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control in that programming manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Water stays in the drum and E dr appears
- The load will not spin because the drum is still full
- The floor drain gurgles or backs up
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Drain valve that stays shut or opens only part way
- Blocked drain line or floor drain holding the water
- Level sensor that never reports the drum as empty
- Drain time or valve setting changed
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E dr on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lint and small items packed in the drain line after a long run of loads
- A drain valve diaphragm that has stiffened and no longer opens fully
Safe checks before calling for service
- Cut power to clear the message, which the manual treats as the reset.
- Check the floor drain for a visible backup, without reaching in.
- Wait until the lock lets go before opening the door, and expect water.
- Call us if the drum does not empty, and say how much water remained.
How a technician diagnoses error code E dr
- Read the code and note how much water remained in the drum.
- Check the floor drain and the drain line for blockage and flow.
- Verify the drain valve opens fully when commanded.
- Check the level sensor reading against the actual water level.
- Review the drain time and valve settings, then replace the valve or sensor only after it tests bad.
- A full drum behind a lock that releases can flood the floor, so opening the door needs care.
- The drain valve and sensor circuits join the control, which carries live 208 to 240 V.
- Clearing a building drain line may involve the facility, and settings for drain time are held in the service programming.
How error code E dr differs from similar codes
E dr is a drain that never finishes. E Sd is a slow drain that still empties, and E Ld is a leak detected at the drain valve.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Why is my drum still full?
The drain did not bring the level down in 15 minutes, so the control stopped the cycle.
Can I drain it by hand?
Do not, while the machine has power.
Is it the washer or the building?
Check whether other machines on the same drain also back up.
