IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E Sd: Slow Drain
E Sd on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is a slow drain detected during a machine cycle: the drum took longer to empty than the average drain time the control expects. The cycle may still finish, so note whether other machines on the same drain are slow too.
Low: a slow drain warning during a cycle that can still finish.
What does IPSO error code E Sd mean?
The control keeps track of how long the drain steps normally take on this machine. When the drum takes longer to empty than that average drain time, it flags a slow drain and shows E Sd. The cycle may still finish, but it takes longer, and spin can end up waiting on water. Staff notice drain steps that drag on. A partly blocked drain line or floor drain is the most likely direction, followed by a kinked or lint-filled hose. A tired drain valve that opens slowly can do the same. If neighboring machines on the shared drain are slow too, the problem is in the building plumbing and not in this washer. E Sd is a warning of a developing problem, as opposed to E dr, which is the alarm when the drain fails to bring the level down within 15 minutes. Attending to a slow drain early avoids the larger stoppage later, and a clean lint trap upstream often helps.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to IPSO washer-extractors in the CHM495R family, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control in that programming manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Drain steps take longer than they used to
- E Sd appears while the cycle continues
- The floor drain gurgles or runs slowly
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Drain line or floor drain partly blocked
- Drain hose kinked or full of lint
- Drain valve slow to open
- Neighboring machines draining slowly too
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E Sd on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lint and fibers building up in the floor drain trap over several weeks
- A drain valve that is still working but opens only part way
Safe checks before calling for service
- Note whether other machines on the same drain are slow as well.
- Look behind the machine for a kinked hose, without pulling the machine out.
- Allow the cycle to complete if it keeps going.
- Ask us to check the drain if the warning keeps recurring, and say how much longer the drain takes.
How a technician diagnoses error code E Sd
- Read the code and time a drain step against the normal duration.
- Check whether other machines on the same line are slow.
- Inspect the drain hose and the floor drain for blockage.
- Confirm the drain valve opens fully when commanded.
- Clear the restriction, then recheck the drain time before replacing the valve.
- Clearing a shared building drain may need plumbing tools and access beyond the machine.
- Checking the drain valve means commanding it on a machine fed by live 208 to 240 V.
- Timing drain steps and comparing them with the machine's average takes a controlled test run.
How error code E Sd differs from similar codes
E Sd is a drain that is slower than usual but still empties. E dr is the alarm when the drum does not empty in 15 minutes.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Do I need to stop the cycle?
No. The cycle may still finish, though it takes longer.
Is it the washer or the building?
If other machines on the same drain are slow, it is likely the building.
Will it get worse?
A partly blocked drain can, so have it checked if the warning recurs.
