IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E SH: Shorted Temperature Sensor
E SH on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor means the temperature sensor circuit reads shorted, as if its wires were touching. The manual puts the reading above 212 F, so the control cannot regulate the heater; watch whether the water temperature matches the cycle.
Medium: temperature control is lost, so washes may come out cooler than programmed.
What does IPSO error code E SH mean?
The temperature sensor on this washer-extractor changes its resistance with the water temperature, and the control turns that into a reading. If the sensor wires touch each other, or the sensor is damaged or soaked inside, the resistance collapses and the reading jumps above 212 F, a value that ordinary wash water would not reach. The control cannot use the sensor and shows E SH. It cannot regulate the heater, so staff see cooler washes than programmed. A sensor damaged or soaked inside is one possibility, a wire pinched until the conductors touch is another, and a damaged connector shorting its pins is a third. This is the mirror image of E oP, where the circuit reads open. Both leave the control blind to the real temperature, but the physical cause differs: here it is something bridging the circuit, and not a break in it. Moisture in the connector is the most common cause in a steamy laundry.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to IPSO washer-extractors in the CHM495R family, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control in that programming manual.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E SH appears and the wash is cooler than programmed
- The heater does not seem to hold the setpoint
- The cycle may carry on without temperature control
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Temperature sensor damaged or soaked inside
- Sensor wire pinched until the conductors touch
- Damaged sensor connector shorting its pins
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SH on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Condensation that has collected in the sensor connector and bridges the pins
- A harness rubbed through its insulation against the tub bracket
Safe checks before calling for service
- Watch whether the wash water temperature matches what you set on the cycle.
- Leave the sensor and its wiring alone, since the connector sits behind covers.
- Let the cycle finish if it carries on.
- Book service with us if the message repeats, and tell us what temperature was set.
How a technician diagnoses error code E SH
- Read the code and confirm E SH returns after a power cycle.
- With the power locked off, inspect the sensor connector for moisture, corrosion and bent pins.
- Check the sensor wires for pinching or damaged insulation.
- Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the expected value.
- Test the control's sensor input before replacing the sensor or the control.
- The sensor and its wires are inside the cabinet near the heater and live wiring.
- A short in the wires and a damaged sensor give the same reading until the sensor is isolated and measured.
- Temperature control affects every heated load, so the repair needs verification with a thermometer.
How error code E SH differs from similar codes
E SH is a sensor circuit that reads shorted, above 212 F. E oP is one that reads open, below 0 F.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Is the water really above 212 F?
No. The control reads that value because the circuit is shorted.
Can I keep washing?
The cycle may carry on, but the heat is not controlled.
Could moisture cause E SH?
Yes. Moisture in the connector is a common cause.
