IPSO Washer Error Code Err: Coin Error
Err on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor with a coin drop is a coin error: the control read an invalid coin pulse, or the coin sensor is not working. The washer will not credit the payment, so the cycle will not start. Check the slot for a bent coin and try one clean coin before calling.
Medium: the machine cannot start paid cycles until the coin path is fixed.
What does IPSO error code Err mean?
On machines fitted with a coin drop, each coin sends a short electrical pulse to the control, and the control counts those pulses against the price of the cycle. The control also checks that the pulses look right. If it reads a pulse that is the wrong length, or finds that the sensor is not responding at all, it refuses to credit the money and displays Err. The cycle will not start. The trouble lies in the coin acceptor path, not in the wash. A bent coin, debris in the slide, a dirty sensor or damaged wiring to the drop can all be behind it. On a machine in a self-service laundry, a coin error costs sales as customers walk away, so it is worth fixing promptly. If the display shows Err on a machine without a coin drop, the label does not apply and a technician should read the manual's code list for that model.
Affected models and control systems
The CHM495R family of washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, fitted with a coin drop. Other controller generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Err on the display after a coin is inserted
- Coins return or drop without credit
- Cycle will not start after payment
- Sensor light in the coin drop does not respond
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Invalid coin pulse read by the control
- Coin sensor not operating
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Err on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Coins or debris jammed in the slide
- Sensor cleanliness and alignment
- The wire run between the coin drop and the control
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check the coin slot and return for a bent coin, without pushing a tool in.
- Try one clean coin and watch what the display does.
- Put the machine out of order if it keeps rejecting coins.
- Ask us to check the coin drop, and note whether any coins are stuck inside.
How a technician diagnoses error code Err
- Read the display and confirm Err appears when a coin is dropped, not at power-up.
- Open the coin drop (power off) and clear debris from the slide and sensor.
- Check the sensor alignment and cleanliness with a test coin.
- Meter the coin drop wiring and connector back to the control.
- Replace the coin sensor or drop; test the control input only if both are good.
- The coin drop wiring runs into the control cabinet, where 208-240 V circuits are live. Coin vaults hold cash and need a technician who can open them safely. Telling a sensor failure from a control input failure needs meter work.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Why does the washer eat my coins?
If the control cannot read the pulse, it will not credit the coin. A bent coin or dirt in the slide is the usual reason.
Will Err clear if I wait?
No. The sensor path has to be cleaned or repaired first.
Is Err a wash-related problem?
No. The washer itself is fine; only payment is blocked.
