IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E SH: Temperature Sensor Shorted
E SH on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor means the control sees the temperature sensor circuit as shorted, with a reading above 212 F. That is impossible for wash water, so the sensor circuit is damaged. Compare the real wash temperature with the target and schedule service if E SH repeats.
Medium: the machine runs, but heat control is lost.

What does IPSO error code E SH mean?
The temperature sensor tells the control how hot the water is. The control knows the range that wash water can reach in an open-vented tub. A reading above 212 F is outside it, because water cannot get that hot in an open-vented tub. When the control sees such a value, it concludes that the sensor circuit is shorted and posts E SH, and it cannot regulate the heater without a good reading. Plant supervisors see cooler washes than formulas require. Pinched wiring, a damaged sensor or moisture in the connector are the usual places to look. A shorted circuit is the mirror image of E oP, where the circuit is open. Either way the control has lost its eyes, so the temperature steps in formulas cannot be trusted until the circuit is repaired.
Affected models and control systems
CHM495R washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control. Other controller generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E SH on the display
- Washes cooler than the formula target
- Heater may shut off early or not run
- Cycle continues without temperature control
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Temperature sensor circuit shorted, reading above 212 F
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SH on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A temperature sensor damaged or soaked with moisture
- Sensor wiring pinched or chafed enough to short out
- A connector at the sensor that is wet or touching metal
- A sensor input on the control that reads shorted
Safe checks before calling for service
- Compare actual wash temperature with the formula's target.
- Keep clear of the sensor and its wiring, which sits near moving parts.
- Let the cycle finish if it continues, and note that it ran off-temperature.
- Schedule service with us if E SH repeats.
How a technician diagnoses error code E SH
- Read the code and confirm that E SH is steady.
- Inspect the sensor wire run for pinches and chafing, with power locked out.
- Check the connector for moisture and bent pins.
- Measure sensor resistance and compare it with a reference temperature.
- Test the control input, and replace the sensor or harness only after the test.
- The sensor wiring passes beside moving drum parts and live 208-240 V circuits. A resistance test needs correct meter use and reference values. A short in the wire can look like a bad sensor.
How error code E SH differs from similar codes
E SH is a shorted sensor (above 212 F). E oP is an open sensor (below 0 F).

Related IPSO industrial laundry error codes
Does E SH mean the water is boiling?
No. The reading is impossible for wash water, which shows the sensor circuit is damaged.
Can I keep washing?
For formulas that do not need heat, yes. Heated formulas need the repair.
Will E SH go away after a restart?
Only if moisture dried out. A damaged wire or sensor keeps it coming back.
