Newco Coffee Brewer Error Code CHECK HEATER: Slow Heating

CHECK HEATER, shown as CONTACT/SERVICE CHECK HEATER on a Newco Fresh Cup 4, means the water is not heating as fast as expected. The manual's test is less than a 1F rise in 4 minutes, or a heater that has run continuously for 30 minutes. A technician checks the hi-limit thermostat, the heating element and the heater relay in that order.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the machine cannot heat water properly, so it will not brew correctly.

What does Newco CHECK HEATER mean?

The control checks that heating actually works. While the heater is on, it expects the water temperature to climb at a minimum rate. The manual defines two triggers. One is a rise of less than 1F in 4 minutes. The other is the heater running continuously for 30 minutes. If either happens, the control displays CONTACT/SERVICE CHECK HEATER. In plain terms, the control is saying that it has asked for heat and the water is not responding. The cause could be in the power path to the heater or in the heater itself. The manual gives a single action, a sequence: check the hi-limit thermostat, part number 111593, then the heating element, part number 704166 for the US 1700W version or 704161 for the Canada 1400W version, then the heater relay, part number 110958. The order works from the safety device that may have tripped, to the element that makes the heat, to the relay that switches it. It lists no operator-level causes beyond the two timing conditions.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Newco Fresh Cup 4 (FKP-4) pod machine, per manual PN 782163 Rev 20250319. The Fresh Cup Touch / FKP-4T manual, PN 782164 Rev 20260730, has a similar list. The US unit uses the 1700W element.

What you may notice

  • CONTACT/SERVICE CHECK HEATER appears
  • Water coming out cooler than usual or heating very slowly
  • Long wait after power-on before the machine is ready

Possible causes

Listed in Newco's documentation

  • Water not rising at least 1F in 4 minutes
  • Heater running continuously for 30 minutes

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind CHECK HEATER on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Hi-limit thermostat tripped and not resetting
  • Heating element burned out or scaled over
  • Heater relay not closing, so no power reaches the element
  • Heavy scale on the element from hard water slowing heat transfer

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the brewer is plugged in firmly and that the outlet and breaker are on.
  2. Turn the brewer off and on once and see whether it heats and clears the message.
  3. Note how long the machine has run since the alert and whether the water is lukewarm or cold.
  4. Tell the technician if descaling is overdue and how hard the local water is.

How a technician diagnoses CHECK HEATER

  1. Confirm the alert and time how fast the water temperature changes when heating is requested.
  2. Verify mains voltage at the brewer under load.
  3. Test the hi-limit thermostat for continuity and for tripped state.
  4. Measure the heating element resistance against the specification for the 1700W or 1400W version.
  5. Check that the heater relay closes and passes voltage when called.
  6. Replace the part that fails its test, then run a full heat-up to confirm the rise rate.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The element, limit device and relay are wired to full line voltage behind the panels, so testing them is live electrical work.
  • Selecting the correct element depends on whether it is the 1700W US or 1400W Canada version.
  • Scale on the element needs descaling and rinsing done correctly to avoid damage.

How CHECK HEATER differs from similar codes

This alert is about the heating rate. It differs from OVERHEAT, which is a temperature above 210F, and from the thermistor alert, which is an open or shorted sensor circuit.

CHECK HEATERQuestions about Newco CHECK HEATER
Can I use the brewer if it eventually heats?

If the water reaches temperature and the alert does not return, you can use it, but a slow heater tends to get worse, so mention it to a technician.

Does CHECK HEATER mean the element is burned out?

Not always. The manual lists the hi-limit thermostat, the element and the relay, in that order.

Is the 30-minute condition different from the 4-minute one?

Yes. One is too slow a rise, the other is a heater that has been on a full 30 minutes without success.
