Pitco Commercial Fryer Error Code HEAt FAIL: Digital Control
HEAt FAIL on a Pitco Solstice digital solid state control means the controller did not receive the 24 VAC heat feedback signal within about 90 seconds of calling for heat. A technician should check the hi-limit, the ignition module and the HD relay.
High: the burner is not confirmed lit, so the fryer does not heat.
What does Pitco HEAt FAIL mean?
On the digital solid state control, the display reads HEAt FAIL when the heat call goes unanswered. After the control asks for heat, it waits about 90 seconds for a 24 VAC heat feedback signal, HFB, from the burner circuit. When it does not come, the control stops waiting and shows the message. This points to a break in the heat demand or heat feedback circuit. The service manual lists the same three places to check as for the computer control. The hi-limit switch can be open or tripped. The ignition module can fail to sense the pilot flame, be locked out, or lack 24 VAC at the main valve terminal. And the HD relay on the relay board can fail to show continuity from COM to NO when energized. The control type differs from the computer control, but the circuit logic is the same.
Affected models and control systems
Pitco Solstice and Solstice Supreme SG/SSH series high-efficiency gas fryers. This page covers the digital solid state control (manual p. 83).
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- HEAt FAIL on the digital display
- Oil not heating
- Burner not firing
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind HEAt FAIL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Hi-limit tripped open
- Ignition module locked out or not sensing the pilot
- HD relay contacts not closing
- Loose 24 VAC connection between the ignition module and the control
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check the gas shutoff valve is open and the oil level is correct.
- Turn the fryer off, wait, and try once.
- Look for a hi-limit reset button and tell us if it has tripped.
- Do not repeat lighting attempts; give us the model and display.
How a technician diagnoses HEAt FAIL
- Confirm the missing HFB signal at the control.
- Test the hi-limit for continuity.
- Check the ignition module for pilot sensing, lockout and 24 VAC at the main valve terminal.
- Test the HD relay COM to NO with the relay energized.
- Replace the failed part and watch a full heat-up.
- Gas ignition and valve parts are gas-safety items for a technician only.
- Voltage checks happen on live 24 VAC circuits inside the fryer.
How HEAt FAIL differs from similar codes
HEAt FAIL on the digital control matches the HEAT FAIL / IGNITION FAILURE message on the computer control.

Related Pitco fryer error codes
Is HEAt FAIL the same as on the computer control?
The meaning and checks are the same. Only the display wording differs.
What is HFB?
The 24 VAC heat feedback signal that shows the burner circuit responded.
Can I reset it?
Turn the fryer off and back on once, but repeated failures need a technician.
