What does Pitco error code Prob HI mean?
The HI in Prob HI marks the shorted-probe version of the probe message. When the probe or its wiring is shorted, the controller sees a signal that no real oil temperature could give, and it displays Prob HI instead of the plain Prob. The service manual's remedy is to test the probe and its wiring for a short. A short can come from a probe whose element has failed, from a cable that has worn through against a hot metal edge, or from oil and moisture getting into a connector. In every case the controller has lost its picture of the oil temperature. The test is a resistance measurement with the fryer cool and isolated. It differs from Prob, where the circuit is open and the test is for continuity. A technician usually checks the cable run along the vat wall first, since a lead that has rubbed on a hot metal edge is a common reason for insulation to fail, and a short can come and go as the cable moves with heat.
