Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E03: Pressure Sensor Short

E03 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Short circuit signal boiler pressure sensor. The control sees an impossible signal from the boiler pressure sensor. The manual gives no operator remedy, so contact a Rancilio service technician.

Medium · inspection needed

High: without a pressure reading the control cannot manage the boiler safely.

What does Rancilio error code E03 mean?

The boiler pressure sensor sends the control a small electrical signal that rises and falls with boiler pressure. The control expects that signal to sit between two limits. When the wire is shorted, the signal collapses to one end of the range, and the control knows that no real boiler pressure could produce it. It shows E03 Short circuit signal boiler pressure sensor. Without a believable pressure reading, the machine cannot manage the boiler safely: it cannot tell if pressure is building, if it has reached the working value, or if it is rising too far. The manual lists the code in its List of errors and gives no operator step, and the cause is in the sensor or its wiring, which sits next to a hot, wet boiler. Wires there can chafe, the insulation can harden with heat, and moisture can find its way into the connector.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Classe 11 USB and Xcelsius espresso machines. We read the List of errors in the 07/2014 edition of the manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E03 on the display
  • Machine stops heating or will not build steam
  • Pressure gauge and display do not agree
  • Entry added to the error history

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E03 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Pressure sensor wire pinched or chafed against the boiler frame
  • Moisture in the sensor connector
  • Pressure sensor element failing internally
  • Insulation hardened by heat near the boiler

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off and let the boiler cool.
  2. Do not touch the wiring near the boiler or open the panels.
  3. Look for water dripping near the pressure sensor and wipe up any spills.
  4. Restart once to see if the code returns.
  5. Contact a Rancilio service technician and give the date, time and whether the pressure gauge showed a value.

How a technician diagnoses error code E03

  1. Read E03 and the error history with dates and times.
  2. Compare the pressure gauge with the pressure shown by the control, if available.
  3. Disconnect the sensor and test the signal wire for a short to ground or to supply.
  4. Inspect the wiring and connector for chafing, heat damage and moisture.
  5. Test the sensor against a known good one.
  6. Replace the sensor or wire section that fails, and run the boiler to pressure.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The sensor wire runs close to a hot pressurized boiler, and working there needs the machine cool and depressurized.
  • Short circuit testing involves a meter on live control wiring.
  • The control uses this reading to protect the boiler, so a wrong replacement could remove that protection.

How error code E03 differs from similar codes

E04 is the same sensor signal with a broken wire instead of a short circuit.

E03Questions about Rancilio error code E03
Does E03 mean the boiler is over pressure?

No. It means the sensor signal is shorted, so the control cannot tell the pressure at all.

Can I keep using the machine?

It is better not to. The control has no usable pressure reading.

Is E03 the same as E04?

No. E03 is a short circuit on the sensor signal and E04 is a broken wire.
