Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E04: Pressure Sensor Wire Broken
E04 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Broken wire signal boiler pressure sensor. The control has lost the boiler pressure reading. The manual gives no operator remedy, so contact a Rancilio service technician.
High: the control has lost the boiler pressure reading.

What does Rancilio error code E04 mean?
The boiler pressure sensor sends the control a small signal that follows boiler pressure. If the wire to the sensor breaks or a connector comes apart, the signal disappears, which looks to the control like a circuit that has gone open. The control shows E04 Broken wire signal boiler pressure sensor. It cannot tell if pressure is low, normal or too high, so it stops managing the boiler on a guess. This is different from a sensor that reads wrongly: here nothing arrives at all. A wire that has broken is often a connector that has worked loose, or a lead that has been flexed or heated over time, and the sensor sits next to the boiler where heat and vibration are constant. The manual lists the code but gives no separate operator remedy, so a technician has to find the break.
Affected models and control systems
Rancilio Classe 11 espresso machines (USB and Xcelsius), from the manual's List of errors. The edition we read is dated 07/2014.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E04 on the display
- Machine will not heat or steam as normal
- Pressure value missing from the display
- Entry in the error history
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Sensor connector worked loose from vibration
- Lead broken where it flexes near the boiler
- Pin corroded inside the connector
- Pressure transducer open inside its housing
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off and let the boiler cool.
- Do not pull on the wires near the boiler.
- Restart once and see whether E04 returns.
- Do not open the control panels.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and tell them if the machine was moved or cleaned just before the code.
How a technician diagnoses error code E04
- Read E04 and the error history.
- Check that the sensor connector is seated and clean.
- Test continuity of the signal wire from the sensor to the board.
- Measure the sensor supply and signal at the board.
- Test the sensor.
- Replace the broken lead or the sensor, then verify the pressure reading with a gauge.
- The sensor wire is beside a hot pressurized boiler.
- Continuity testing means a meter on control wiring while the machine is open.
- A wrong pressure signal can mislead the boiler protection.
How error code E04 differs from similar codes
E03 is the same sensor signal shorted instead of broken.

Related Rancilio espresso machine error codes
What is a broken wire code?
The control lost the connection to the pressure sensor, so it gets no signal.
Could a loose connector be the reason?
Yes, and that is a common one, but a technician should check it.
Is the boiler in danger?
The control cannot see boiler pressure, so do not run the machine until it is repaired.
