Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E13: General Function Short
E13 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Short circuit general function (iSteam, illumination): the general-function output, which feeds the iSteam option and the lighting, is shorted. The manual gives no operator remedy, so switch the machine off and contact a Rancilio service technician.
High: an electrical short needs the machine off and a technician.

What does Rancilio error code E13 mean?
Besides the groups and the boiler, the Classe 11 control has an output for general functions. The manual names two of them: iSteam and the machine's lighting. The control watches the current on that output. If a load or its wiring starts drawing far more than normal, the control treats it as a short circuit, protects its board and records E13 Short circuit general function (iSteam, illumination). The code tells you which output has the problem, but not which of the loads on it. A lamp or LED strip with damaged insulation, a wet connector at the steam wand, or a failed iSteam part could each cause it. The manual lists the code without an operator remedy. Lights and steam wand features may stop working, and because a short can heat wiring and stress the board, the machine should be left off until it has been checked.
Affected models and control systems
Classe 11 USB and Xcelsius machines from Rancilio; the code is taken from the List of errors in the user manual dated 07/2014.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E13 on the display
- Lighting off or flickering
- iSteam function not working
- Other functions affected or the machine stopping
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E13 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Lighting lead or lamp with worn insulation
- Water in the iSteam connector near the steam wand
- iSteam part failed and drawing too much current
- Board output for the general functions failing
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at the main switch.
- Do not touch the lighting or steam wand wiring.
- Wipe up any water around the steam wand area, keeping it away from connectors.
- Do not run the machine until it has been checked.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and tell them that the code is E13 and which lights or steam features stopped.
How a technician diagnoses error code E13
- Read E13 and the error history to see when the short appears.
- Disconnect the loads on the general-function output one at a time, starting with the lighting, and see when the code clears.
- Measure the resistance and insulation of the lighting leads and the iSteam wiring.
- Inspect connectors near the steam wand for moisture and corrosion.
- Check the board output for the general functions.
- Replace the shorted load or lead and confirm the output stays stable.
- Tracing a short means measuring live circuits with the machine open and next to wet, hot parts.
- A short left in place can overheat wiring or damage the control board.
- The steam wand area combines water, steam and electrical connections, which makes mistakes there more serious.
How error code E13 differs from similar codes
E09 to E12 are shorts on the 24 V supply of individual brew groups, while E13 covers the general-function output.

Is E13 only about the lights?
No. The manual names both iSteam and the illumination on that output, so a technician checks both.
Can I brew while E13 shows?
It is better not to. A short is an electrical problem, and the machine should be checked before it is used.
Could water cause E13?
Water in a connector is a common reason for a short, though the manual does not name a cause.
