Rancilio Espresso Machine Error Code E14: Level Sensor Short
E14 on a Rancilio Classe 11 reads Short circuit level sensor: the boiler level sensor circuit is shorted. The manual gives no operator remedy, so switch the machine off and contact a Rancilio service technician.
High: without a trustworthy level reading the boiler cannot be filled or heated safely.

What does Rancilio error code E14 mean?
The Classe 11 needs to know how much water is in the boiler before it heats. The boiler level sensor gives the control that information through a small circuit. When the circuit is shorted, the control sees a signal no real water level could produce and records E14 Short circuit level sensor. Because it cannot tell whether the boiler has water, it cannot decide whether filling or heating is safe. Heating a boiler without knowing its level is a risk, so the machine may stop filling or heating until the circuit is repaired. A short on this circuit often comes from the sensor probe itself, its lead where it passes the hot boiler, or moisture and scale in the connector. The manual lists the code with no operator remedy. The practical steps for an operator are to switch off and avoid forcing the machine to heat.

What you may notice
- E14 on the display
- Machine will not fill or heat the boiler
- Boiler level unknown to the control
- Entry added to the error history
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E14 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Level probe coated with scale so it conducts to the boiler wall
- Probe lead rubbed through near the hot boiler
- Moisture or scale in the level sensor connector
- Board input for the level circuit failing
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off and let the boiler cool.
- Do not try to heat the machine to force the code away.
- Check that the water supply is open and the tank, if any, has water.
- Do not open panels or touch the wiring near the boiler.
- Contact a Rancilio service technician and note whether the machine was filling at the time.
How a technician diagnoses error code E14
- Read E14 and the error history to see whether it appears during fill or heat-up.
- Disconnect the level sensor and see whether the short clears.
- Inspect the probe for scale and the lead for damage.
- Check the connector for moisture and corrosion.
- Test the board input for the level circuit.
- Clean or replace the probe or lead, then check that fill and heat-up complete.
- The level probe sits in a pressurized hot boiler, so removing it requires the boiler to be cool and depressurized.
- Testing the circuit involves a meter on live control wiring.
- A wrong level reading can allow heating without water, which damages the element.
How error code E14 differs from similar codes
E01 reports that the boiler did not fill in time, while E14 reports a short on the level sensor circuit itself.

Related Rancilio espresso machine error codes
Does E14 mean the boiler is empty?
No. It means the level signal is shorted, so the control cannot tell either way.
Can I top up the boiler by hand?
No. The boiler fills through the machine's own circuit and should not be opened.
Is E14 the same as E01?
No. E01 is a fill time-out with water missing, and E14 is a short circuit on the level sensor.
