Varimixer Mixer Error Code 03: Bowl Not Detected
Code 03 on a Varimixer ERGO mixer means the bowl is not detected. Check that the bowl is positioned correctly and pushed all the way back into the bowl arms so the sensor is activated. If the contact is not restored, the lift stops.
Low: an operator check that usually clears when the bowl is pushed fully back.
What does Varimixer error code 03 mean?
A sensor on the ERGO mixer detects when the bowl sits fully in its arms. If the bowl is not detected, the control shows 03 and will not run the mixer as normal. The manual adds detail on the lift: the bowl can still be lowered with the code shown, and for the first 5 seconds of the code the lift can continue, but then it stops until contact is restored. That stops a bowl from being lifted when it is not properly seated, which could let it slip. The usual reason is a bowl that is not pushed all the way back into the arms. A bowl that is damaged, a different bowl that does not reach the sensor, or a sensor that is dirty or misaligned could also keep the signal from registering.
Affected models and control systems
The ERGO100 and ERGO150 mixers (VL-5, touch display), using the Varimixer USA operating instructions printed REV. - 3/27/2024.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- 03 on the touch display
- Bowl lift stopping a few seconds after it begins
- Agitator will not start
- Bowl visibly not seated against the back of the arms
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 03 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Bowl not positioned correctly in the bowl arms, so the sensor is not activated
- Bowl lip bent or dented so it does not seat
- Bowl from another machine that does not reach the sensor
- Batter or dough dried on the sensor face
- Sensor bracket knocked out of position
Safe checks before calling for service
- Lower the bowl if it is raised.
- Push the bowl all the way back into the bowl arms until it seats.
- Check that the bowl is the correct one for the mixer and not dented.
- Raise the bowl again and see whether 03 clears.
- If 03 stays with a well-seated bowl, note which bowl you use and whether the code appears every time.
How a technician diagnoses error code 03
- Read the code and test with a known good bowl.
- Check the sensor face for dirt and the bracket for position.
- Measure the sensor gap or activation with a bowl seated.
- Check the wiring to the sensor input.
- Watch the input change as the bowl is seated.
- Adjust or replace the sensor.
- The sensor is part of the mixer's safety logic and has to be positioned to the maker's setting.
- Wiring checks are made with the covers off and power on.
- A bowl that rocks in the arms can be a wear or frame problem that needs inspection.
How error code 03 differs from similar codes
Code 01 reports a bowl that is not at working height and code 02 reports a missing guard. Code 03 reports a bowl that is not sensed in the arms.
