Vulcan Commercial Fryer Error Code HIGH TMP: Oil Over 415F Warning
HIGH TMP flashing on a Vulcan PowerFry with the Computer (C) control means the oil temperature is at or above 415F (212C). It is a warning to stop and look at the fryer. Turn it off at the control, let the oil cool by itself and call us.
High: oil this hot is a burn and fire risk and the fryer should stay off.
What does Vulcan HIGH TMP mean?
The Computer (C) control keeps checking oil temperature against a set point and against a hard ceiling. When the reading reaches 415F (212C) the display flashes HIGH TMP, and because the screen alternates, you may see the message twice. The message is a hand-off to the operator: something is wrong, so stop and look. A probe that reads low, a gas valve that does not close or the computer asking for heat it should not are the three paths the manual points to. Which one is responsible cannot be told from the display alone, because in each case the fryer simply keeps heating. The first response is the same either way. Shut the fryer off at the control, let the oil cool on its own, and keep people, buckets and filters away from the vat until it is cool.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Vulcan VK/TR PowerFry gas fryers with the Computer (C) control, including the 1TR45, 1VK65 and 2TR85. The Solid State (D) control uses the wording HIGH TEMP.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- HIGH TMP flashing on the display
- Message alternating with another screen
- Oil much hotter than the set temperature
- Smoke or a hot oil smell from the vat
Possible causes
Listed in Vulcan's documentation
- The probe and its reading against real oil temperature
- The gas valve
- The high limit
- The computer's heat output
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind HIGH TMP on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Probe lead scorched near the burner so it reads wrong at high heat
- Relay on the computer output stuck closed so heat stays on
- Gas valve that does not seat fully after a long busy period
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the fryer off at the control.
- Let the oil cool on its own.
- Keep hands, buckets and filters away from the hot oil, and keep people away from the vat.
- If you smell gas, go outside and call the gas utility.
- Tell us what temperature was set and what the display showed when it flashed.
How a technician diagnoses HIGH TMP
- Read the message and the set temperature in use.
- When cool, inspect probe mounting and lead.
- Compare probe readings with a reference thermometer.
- Test the gas valve operation when heat is not called for.
- Check the high limit and the heat output of the computer.
- Replace only the part that fails, then verify a heat-up.
- Oil near 415F can cause severe burns and ignite, so it must not be handled.
- A gas valve that stays open is a gas appliance problem for a trained technician.
- Heat output and limit circuits are wired to line voltage inside the cabinet.
How HIGH TMP differs from similar codes
HIGH TMP is the Computer (C) wording, while the Solid State (D) control shows HIGH TEMP and also locks out operator buttons.

Why does the message flash twice?
The display alternates, so the message may appear twice in a row.
Can I turn it back on right away?
Not until the oil has cooled and the cause is found. A hot restart can repeat the problem.
Is the probe always the cause?
No. The gas valve or the computer's heat output can be responsible too.
