Vulcan Commercial Fryer Error Code SHORTED PROBE: Probe Circuit Short

SHORTED PROBE on a Vulcan PowerFry with the Solid State (D) control means the temperature probe circuit reads as a short. The control disables heat, cancels cooking cycles and locks the operator buttons. Switch the fryer off, let the oil cool, look for a pinched lead without touching the oil, and call us if it returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the fryer stops heating and its controls lock until the short is repaired.

What does Vulcan SHORTED PROBE mean?

With the Solid State (D) control, the oil probe is read as a resistance. A short in the circuit pulls that resistance far below any real oil temperature, and the control cannot trust it. It therefore disables the heat, cancels cooking cycles and locks the operator buttons, then shows SHORTED PROBE. The fryer goes cold and stays locked until the circuit tests good. A short can come from a lead pinched under a panel or scorched by heat, from moisture and grease bridging the contacts in the connector, from an RTD element that has shorted internally, or from a shorted input on the control. The display cannot tell these apart. What the operator can do safely is cool the fryer, look at the visible lead path for damage without touching the oil, and try one restart. If the message comes back, the circuit has to be measured.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Vulcan VK/TR PowerFry gas fryers with the Solid State (D) control, including the 1TR45, 1VK65 and 2TR85. The Computer (C) control calls this PROBE SHORT.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • SHORTED PROBE on the display
  • Heat off and keys locked
  • Vat cooling mid-service
  • Lead visibly squeezed or scorched

Possible causes

Listed in Vulcan's documentation

  • A probe lead pinched under a panel or scorched by heat
  • Moisture and grease bridging the contacts in the probe connector
  • An RTD probe whose internal element has shorted out
  • A shorted probe input on the Solid State control

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind SHORTED PROBE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Panel reinstalled after cleaning with the lead trapped under its edge
  • Boil-over running down and soaking the connector
  • Lead resting against hot flue metal until the insulation melted

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the fryer off and let the oil cool.
  2. Look for a probe lead that is pinched, pulled or touching hot metal, without touching the oil.
  3. Switch the fryer back on.
  4. If SHORTED PROBE returns, call us.
  5. Do not drain hot oil, and if gas is in the air, leave the building and call the utility.

How a technician diagnoses SHORTED PROBE

  1. Read the message and let the oil cool.
  2. Inspect the lead path for pinching, melting or chafing.
  3. Check the connector for water and grease.
  4. Measure probe resistance and compare with a reference.
  5. Test the control input without the probe attached.
  6. Replace the damaged lead or probe and confirm a normal heat-up.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The probe and its lead run next to the burner and flue on a gas appliance.
  • Separating a bad probe from a bad control input needs a meter and reference values.
  • Control wiring in the cabinet is live.

How SHORTED PROBE differs from similar codes

SHORTED PROBE is the Solid State (D) wording; the Computer (C) control words this condition PROBE SHORT.

SHORTED PROBEQuestions about Vulcan SHORTED PROBE
Why are the buttons locked?

The control locks operator buttons while it cannot read the oil temperature.

Can wet cleaning cause this?

Yes, water in the probe connector can create a short, and it may clear once dry.

Can I run the fryer without a probe?

No. Without a reading the control will not run the burner.
