Vulcan Commercial Fryer Error Code IGNITION LOCKOUT: Burner Not Lit

IGNITION LOCKOUT on a Vulcan PowerFry with the Solid State (D) digital control means the burner did not prove a flame. After 90 seconds an alarm sounds and the heat demand is disabled. Check that the gas shut-off valve is open, turn the fryer off and on again, and call us if it locks out again.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the fryer will not heat and stays locked out until power is cycled.

What does Vulcan IGNITION LOCKOUT mean?

When the fryer calls for heat, the control opens the gas valve, fires the ignition spark and waits for a flame signal. If no flame is proven, it does not keep trying forever. After 90 seconds it sounds an alarm, disables the heat demand, cancels any cooking cycle and shows IGNITION LOCKOUT. The control stays locked until the fryer is turned off and back on, so a vat can sit cold in the middle of service. The most common cause is no gas or low gas supply, for example a closed shut-off valve after cleaning or a supply problem in the building. The manual also points to the ignition electrode and its gap, the ignition module and its wiring, and the gas valve on the burner. None of those can be judged by looking at the display, which is why a second lockout means stop.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Vulcan VK/TR PowerFry gas fryers with the Solid State (D) digital control, including the 1TR45, 1VK65 and 2TR85. The Computer (C) control words this as IGNITION LOCKOUT CHECK GAS SUPPLY.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Alarm sounding after about 90 seconds
  • IGNITION LOCKOUT on the display
  • Vat staying cold
  • No flame visible at the burner

Possible causes

Listed in Vulcan's documentation

  • The gas shut-off valve and the supply pressure
  • The ignition electrode and its gap
  • The ignition module and its wiring
  • The gas valve on the burner

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind IGNITION LOCKOUT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Shut-off valve bumped partly closed during floor cleaning
  • Electrode coated with carbon from boil-over so the spark is weak
  • Flame sensing path dirty, so a lit burner is not proven in time

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the gas shut-off valve to the fryer is open.
  2. Turn the fryer off, then back on, as the owner's manual lists.
  3. Watch whether the burner lights within about 90 seconds.
  4. If it locks out again, stop and call us.
  5. If gas is ever in the air, walk outside and phone the gas utility, and do not drain or filter hot oil.

How a technician diagnoses IGNITION LOCKOUT

  1. Read the lockout and confirm the shut-off valve is fully open.
  2. Measure supply and manifold gas pressure at ignition.
  3. Inspect the electrode for gap, carbon and cracked porcelain.
  4. Check spark and the flame sensing signal at the module.
  5. Test the gas valve coil and its supply voltage.
  6. Replace the part that fails and observe three clean lights.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Gas pressure checks and valve work are done on a live gas appliance and need the right gauges.
  • Ignition modules and the spark circuit carry high voltage.
  • Repeated tries at lighting a locked-out burner can let gas build up in the cabinet.

How IGNITION LOCKOUT differs from similar codes

IGNITION LOCKOUT is the Solid State (D) wording. The Computer (C) control on the same fryers adds CHECK GAS SUPPLY to the message.

IGNITION LOCKOUTQuestions about Vulcan IGNITION LOCKOUT
Will it relight by itself?

No. The control stays locked out until the fryer is turned off and on again.

Why 90 seconds?

That is how long the control waits for a flame to be proven before it sounds the alarm and locks out.

What if it lights on the second try?

Note that it happened and call us. An intermittent ignition problem usually returns.
