WMF Automatic Coffee Machine Error Code 161: Brewing Water Flow Error

What does WMF error code 161 mean?

During a brew, the control counts how much water passes through the brewing path and compares it with the amount the recipe calls for. If less water flows than expected, it stops and reports code 161, a flow error in the brewing water. Staff usually see slow or weak coffee first and then the code. The usual causes are a grind that is too fine, which packs the coffee puck and slows the water, a recipe set stronger than the machine can pass, or a blocked water path. The owner's manual works through these in order: restart, then set the grinding degree coarser, then reduce the quality setting in the recipe, switching off and on after each change. If none of those clears it, the brewing unit's filter surfaces, the water supply or the flow meter itself need a technician's attention.

How a technician diagnoses error code 161

1. Read the code and ask which recipes trigger it.
2. Check the grind setting and the water pressure and supply.
3. Remove and inspect the brewing unit and its filters for blockage and scale.
4. Run a water-only flow test and compare the volume with the setpoint.
5. Check the flow meter and its signal.
6. Descale or replace the blocked part and test several brews.
