WMF Automatic Coffee Machine Error Code 88: Boiler Over Temperature

What does WMF error code 88 mean?

The boiler has an upper temperature limit that the control enforces. If the reading goes above that limit, the control stops heating to protect the machine and shows code 88. Staff see drinks stop. A wrong sensor reading, a heater that stays on or scale on the heating surface can each be behind it. Scale matters because it insulates the heating surface from the water, so the element runs hotter than the water it is warming. The owner's manual says to switch off and on again for this code, and cooling time before the restart is important, because turning it on while the boiler is still hot may trip the same limit. The water supply and boiler level also matter, since a boiler short of water heats quickly. A repeat code means the sensor and heater switching should be tested.
