WMF Automatic Coffee Machine Error Code 9083: Cooler in Frost Range

Code 9083 on a WMF 5000 S+ says the cooler temperature is in the frost range, so milk could freeze. First check whether the cooler temperature is set too low on the display and raise it a little. Discard any milk with ice crystals and call us if the code returns at a normal setting.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: the cooler is too cold rather than failed, and a setting change often clears it.

What does WMF error code 9083 mean?

The milk cooler keeps milk cold but above freezing, and the control reads its temperature with a sensor. If the reading drops into the frost range, the machine reports code 9083 because milk that freezes separates and clogs the milk path. Staff see the code and the milk may be partly frozen or slushy. The owner's manual points to the simplest explanation first: the cooler temperature setting may be too low. Raising it a little usually ends the problem. If the setting is normal and the code still appears, then the cooler temperature sensor, the cooler control and its output, or airflow around the cooler are in question. For example, a sensor reading too cold would shut off cooling, which would be harmless, but a control output stuck on would keep chilling the milk. Frozen milk should be thrown away rather than used in drinks.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the WMF 5000 S+, per the WMF 5000 S+ user manual section 8.2.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Code 9083 on the display
  • Ice crystals or slush in the milk
  • Milk flow slow or blocked
  • Cooler very cold to the touch

Possible causes

Listed in WMF's documentation

  • Cooler temperature setting too low
  • Cooler temperature sensor
  • Cooler control and its output
  • Airflow around the cooler

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 9083 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Setting lowered during a hot summer and left there
  • Milk container pressed against the cold plate
  • Cooling output staying on because the control does not switch it off

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the cooler temperature setting on the display.
  2. If it is set very low, raise it a little, as the owner's manual says.
  3. Look at the milk for ice crystals and discard milk that has frozen.
  4. Give the cooler a few hours to settle at the new setting.
  5. If code 9083 returns with a normal setting, call us and tell us the setting you used.

How a technician diagnoses error code 9083

  1. Read the code and the cooler setpoint.
  2. Measure the actual cooler temperature with a reference thermometer.
  3. Compare the sensor reading with the reference.
  4. Check airflow and fan around the cooler.
  5. Test whether the cooling output switches off at the setpoint.
  6. Replace the sensor or control after confirming the failure.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The cooler is a refrigeration circuit that needs trained handling.
  • Cooling output tests are made on live circuits inside the machine.
  • Reading the sensor against a reference takes calibrated tools.

9083Questions about WMF error code 9083
Is the milk safe to use?

Throw away milk that has ice crystals, because freezing damages it and can block the milk path.

How much should I raise the setting?

A little, as the manual says. Do not jump to the warmest value.

Will the code go away on its own?

Once the temperature rises out of the frost range, usually yes.
