WMF Automatic Coffee Machine Error Code 6: Brewing Unit Stiff or Stuck
Code 6 on a WMF 1500 F with internal storage reports a brewing unit that is stiff or stuck, so coffee drinks stop. Switch the machine off, let it cool, switch it on again, and empty the grounds container if it is nearly full. If code 6 comes back, do not reach into the brewing unit and call us.
Medium: coffee drinks stop until the brewing unit moves freely again.

What does WMF error code 6 mean?
The brewing unit moves up and down inside the machine to press the grounds and then release the used puck. A motor drives it, and the control watches the motor current and the position of the unit. If the unit is stiff or jammed, the current rises or the position is not reached on time, and the control stops coffee drinks to protect the motor. Staff see code 6 and coffee drinks stop until the problem is dealt with. Compacted grounds in the unit, a unit that needs cleaning or lubrication, or a worn position sensing system can each cause the stiffness. The owner's manual suggests a simple first step: switch off, let the machine cool and switch on again, which lets the unit return to its home position. Anything beyond that means someone has to open the unit, which should be done by a technician.

What you may notice

- Grinding noise followed by a stalled brew
- Unit not returning to its home position
- Tea and hot water drinks still available
Possible causes
Listed in WMF's documentation
- Brewing unit stiffness or jam
- Compacted grounds in the unit
- Brewing motor current
- Position sensing
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 6 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Cleaning tablets skipped for weeks, so oils glue the unit slides
- Grounds container left full so the used puck cannot eject
- Brewing unit seals swollen after a long period without service
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off and let it cool.
- Switch it on again, as the owner's manual says.
- Empty the grounds container if it is nearly full.
- Check whether non-coffee drinks still work.
- If code 6 comes back, do not reach into the brewing unit, and tell us when the last cleaning was run.
How a technician diagnoses error code 6
- Read the code and ask about recent cleaning.
- Remove the brewing unit and check it by hand for free travel.
- Inspect for packed grounds, worn seals and dry slides.
- Measure the motor current while it moves.
- Check the position sensor signal.
- Clean, lubricate or replace the unit, then test several brews.
- The brewing unit presses with a motor that can crush fingers.
- Motor current and sensor checks happen inside the housing next to mains wiring.
- Refitting and calibrating the unit takes the machine's own settings.

Can I still serve tea or hot water?
Code 6 stops coffee drinks, and other drinks may still be available.
Why does the manual say to let it cool?
The switch-off and cool-down let the control reset and the unit settle before it tries again.
Will cleaning help?
Often. A dirty, sticky unit is a common reason for stiffness, but removing it is for a technician.
