WMF Automatic Coffee Machine Error Code 186: Steam Boiler Level
Code 186 on a WMF 5000 S+ reports a problem with the steam boiler level, and beverage dispensing is temporarily blocked. The most common cause is too little water reaching the steam boiler. Check that the main water inlet tap is open, switch the machine off and on, and call us if the code returns.

What does WMF error code 186 mean?
The steam boiler needs a certain water level to produce steam safely, and a level probe tells the control whether that level is right. When the probe says the level is wrong, usually too low, the control blocks beverage dispensing while it tries to bring the boiler back to its working level through the fill valve. Staff see drinks stop and code 186 on the display. The simplest explanation is a supply issue, such as the main tap at the water inlet being closed or a supply hose that is folded and restricts the flow. A water filter that is clogged can do the same by slowing the refill. Only if the supply is fine and the code returns does attention move to the level probe and the fill valve themselves. Running the steam heater with too little water would damage it, so the machine holds back drinks instead.
