WMF Automatic Coffee Machine Error Code 89: Boiler Heat-Up Too Slow

What does WMF error code 89 mean?

After switch-on, the control gives the boiler a fixed time to reach its working temperature. It watches the temperature sensor climb. If the temperature has not arrived when the time runs out, the control stops waiting and shows code 89, a boiler heat-up that took too long. Staff see the code and drinks may be cold or not available. The cause can be a heating element that works but too slowly, a sensor that reports the heat-up wrongly, a heater control that is not switching on fully, or scale on the heating surface that slows the transfer of heat into the water. This differs from an overheated boiler, because here the problem is too little heat, not too much. The owner's manual says to switch off and on and call service if that does not help. Writing down how long the machine had been on helps a technician judge which cause fits.
