IPSO Washer Error Code Ed03: Tachometer Error
Ed03 on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is a tachometer error: the drive did not get a tach signal, or its tach input was damaged at power-up. Cut power at the disconnect, make sure nothing is wedged against the basket, and call for the H3 and tach checks.
Medium: the machine will not run, but the cause is often a connection rather than a major part.
What does IPSO error code Ed03 mean?
The motor drive needs to know that the basket is actually turning. It gets that knowledge from a tachometer signal, a stream of pulses from a sensor at the motor. When the drive starts the motor, it expects pulses to appear almost at once. If it finds its tach input damaged at power-up, or no signal arrives after the motor output begins, it stops and the control shows Ed03. Operators see the machine try to start and then quit without reaching speed. The manual lists power down, then verify the H3 connection on the drive and the tach connections. The logic is that the drive cannot run blind, so it stops safely. A loose tach plug is the cheapest explanation, a failing sensor the next, and the drive's own input the last. All of those sit behind live covers, so staff can only remove obvious obstructions and cut power.
Affected models and control systems
The CHM495R family of washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control. Other controller generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Machine tries to start, then stops without reaching speed
- Ed03 on the display
- Brief motor hum with no basket rotation
- Code returns at the next start attempt
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- The H3 connection on the drive
- Tach wiring and connectors
- The tach sensor at the motor
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed03 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A tach connector worked loose by cabinet vibration
- A sensor gap or magnet that has shifted
- Wiring rubbed through near the motor
- Lint or moisture on the tach plug
Safe checks before calling for service
- Cut power at the machine's disconnect first.
- After the lock releases, make sure nothing is wedged against the basket.
- Leave H3 and the drive to us; they sit behind live covers.
- Call us if Ed03 returns, and say whether the basket turns freely by hand.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed03
- Read the code history and confirm Ed03 repeats at power-up or after the start command.
- Check the H3 connection and tach plug seating with power locked out.
- Inspect tach wiring for chafing and test continuity end to end.
- Check tach sensor output at the motor while the shaft is turned by hand.
- Test the drive's tach input, and replace the sensor or drive only after the wiring tests good.
- The H3 connection is on the drive board, which holds live 208-240 V circuitry. Tach pulse checks need meter or scope work around a rotating shaft. Replacing the wrong part wastes money and leaves the error in place.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Can I run the machine with Ed03 showing?
No. Without a tach signal the drive will not run the motor.
Will it clear on its own?
Only if the cause was a one-time glitch. A loose plug usually brings it back.
How is Ed03 different from Ed04?
Ed03 is a missing speed signal. Ed04 is a rotor that cannot turn at all.
