IPSO Washer Error Code Ed04: Locked Rotor
Ed04 on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor means the motor never reached speed at startup, so the drive decided the rotor was locked and cut the current. Shut the machine off, keep clear of the basket and check for a wedged item with power off. Do not run it if the basket will not turn freely by hand.
High: the basket cannot turn and further starts risk damaging the motor.
What does IPSO error code Ed04 mean?
At startup the drive pushes current into the motor and expects the shaft to begin turning within a short time. It judges that by how quickly speed builds. If the rotor does not move as it should, the drive concludes that the rotor is locked and removes the current at once, because a motor that is energized but cannot turn heats up fast. The control then shows Ed04. Operators hear a hum or a twitch, and then silence. The manual lists power down, verify the motor mounting and look for obstructions. Anything that holds the basket, such as a wedged item, a seized bearing or a shifted motor mount, can cause it. A weak motor or drive can produce the same result without any mechanical jam. Because a mechanical drag may also damage the drive, repeated restarts are a poor idea.
Affected models and control systems
The CHM495R family of washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control. Other controller generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Humming or a twitch from the motor at startup
- Basket does not rotate
- Ed04 on the display
- Heavy resistance when the basket is turned by hand
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Obstructions in or behind the basket
- Motor mounting and alignment
- Bearings and belt condition
- The motor and the drive
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed04 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A drum bearing that has seized from lost lubrication
- A belt that has slipped or jumped its pulley
- A motor with a weak winding that cannot produce starting torque
- Water or debris trapped between the drum and the tub
Safe checks before calling for service
- Shut off the machine at its disconnect and stay clear of the basket.
- After the lock releases, check the drum for a wedged item, with power off.
- Do not run the machine again if the basket will not turn freely by hand.
- Call us, and note any grinding noise or burning smell before the stop.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed04
- Read the code history and see whether Ed04 comes on every start or only after long runs.
- Lock out the machine and turn the basket by hand, feeling for binding or noise.
- Inspect the belt, pulleys, bearings and motor mounting for movement or wear.
- Meter the motor windings and insulation to ground.
- Check drive output, then replace the motor or drive only on a failed test.
- A seized bearing or heavy drum can swing or move unexpectedly during service. Motor and drive tests involve 208-240 V circuits. Motor windings can be damaged by restarts, so a technician must find the cause first.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Can I keep trying to start the washer?
No. Each attempt sends heavy current into a motor that cannot turn, which can overheat it.
Will Ed04 clear itself?
The message clears with a restart, but it returns if the rotor is still held.
Is Ed04 the same as Ed03?
No. Ed03 is a missing tach signal; Ed04 is a rotor that cannot turn.
