IPSO Washer Error Code Ed08: Max Overcurrent
Ed08 on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor means the motor output current went past the highest level the drive allows, so the drive stopped. The manual's only step is to switch power off and on. If Ed08 comes right back, stop and call for a proper test.
High: the drive stops the motor, and repeat events point to wiring or motor damage.
What does IPSO error code Ed08 mean?
The drive sets a ceiling for how much current it will send to the motor. Normal running stays well below it, but a motor that is dragging, a winding that is shorting or a basket that is overloaded can push the current up fast, especially while a load is accelerating. When the measured current goes above the ceiling, the drive shuts off its output so it protects itself and the motor, and the control displays Ed08. Operators see the machine stop under load or at the start of a spin. The manual's only step is to switch power off and on. A dragging basket, a failing motor, a short in the wiring or a drive problem could be behind it. A single event on an unusually heavy load may be just that, but a repeat deserves a proper test, because the same surge can keep stressing the motor and drive.
Affected models and control systems
The CHM495R family of washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Machine stops under load or at the start of a spin
- Ed08 on the display
- Motor sounds strained before the stop
- Code returns on the next heavy load
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Basket and bearing drag
- Motor windings and wiring
- The drive's output stage
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed08 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A load heavier than the drum is rated for
- A bearing starting to bind, adding drag
- A motor winding with partial insulation breakdown
- A drive current sensor reading above the real current
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the power off, then back on, as the manual directs.
- Run the next load at a normal size and watch the display.
- Stop trying if the code returns right away.
- Call us to schedule service, and note the load size when it stopped.
How a technician diagnoses error code Ed08
- Read the code history for how often Ed08 occurs and at which step.
- Turn the basket by hand with the machine locked out to feel for drag.
- Meter motor windings and insulation to ground.
- Check motor leads and connections for heat damage.
- Verify drive output current against the motor rating before replacing the drive.
- Measuring motor and drive output means working with 208-240 V circuits that can injure. Drag from a bearing can be hard to feel without proper lockout. Restarting repeatedly can burn out a motor that only needed a bearing.

Related IPSO washer error codes
Can I run another load after Ed08?
Once, at a normal size. If Ed08 comes back, stop.
Is Ed08 the same as Ed05?
No. Ed05 is the power switches seeing a surge. Ed08 is the current passing the drive's maximum.
Could an overloaded washer cause it?
Yes, an oversized load can, so check the weight before blaming the machine.
