UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E SH: Sensor Circuit Shorted

E SH reports a shorted temperature sensor circuit on UniMac QN, UC-series and UW washer-extractors. The control reads a short as a very high temperature even though the water is not hot. Avoid heated cycles and call us if it returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: heated cycles are unreliable, while cold washes can usually still run.

CHM495R family washer-extractor front-end control (20-100 lb) / PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractor (UWL/UWN/UWU 035-125) front-end control / CHM1792C family washer-extractor (QN models, 20-100 lb) front-end control

What does UniMac error code E SH mean?

E SH reports a shorted temperature sensor circuit on UniMac QN, UC-series and UW pocket hardmount washer-extractors. A short makes the sensor read as if it were extremely hot. The control therefore sees a very high temperature even though the wash water is not hot. UC machines treat readings above 212 F as shorted, and UW machines treat readings above 220 F that way. On QN machines the message appears at the end of the batch.

Pinched or burned wire insulation near the sensor can let the two conductors touch. Moisture or corrosion at the sensor connector can bridge them. A temperature sensor that has shorted out internally gives the same reading. A control input that reads the sensor as shorted is the final possibility.

A QN machine clears the code once the door is opened or a key is pressed. The other machines reset when you cycle power. Keep the door shut and the area around the machine dry.

Affected models and control systems

E SH is listed for the CHM495R family washer-extractors (UC series, 20 to 100 lb), the PHM1263R family pocket hardmount washer-extractors (UWL, UWN and UWU 035 to 125) and the CHM1792C family QN washer-extractors, all with the front-end control.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The display shows E SH, on QN machines at the end of the batch
  • The control believes the water is far hotter than it is
  • Heated washes stop or behave oddly
  • The code returns on the next heated cycle

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Pinched or burned wire insulation near the sensor
  • Moisture or corrosion at the sensor connector
  • A temperature sensor that has shorted out internally
  • A control input that reads the sensor as shorted

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E SH on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Sensor lead squeezed between the tub and the cabinet
  • Detergent crust bridging the connector pins
  • Sensor element cracked by thermal shock
  • Input circuit damaged by a surge

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. A QN machine clears the code once the door is opened or a key is pressed.
  2. The other machines reset when you cycle power.
  3. Keep the door shut and the area around the machine dry.
  4. If E SH comes back, avoid heated cycles and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E SH

  1. Read the code and note the control family.
  2. Lock out the machine and inspect the sensor connector for moisture.
  3. Check the sensor wire for pinched or burned insulation.
  4. Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the water temperature.
  5. Replace the sensor or repair the wire; check the control input if both are good.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Checking the sensor wire and connector means opening the cabinet and tub area.
  • Sensor resistance has to be compared with a known temperature.
  • A short may be caused by water near live parts.

How error code E SH differs from similar codes

E SH is the shorted reading, while E oP is the open reading on the same temperature sensor.

E SHQuestions about UniMac error code E SH
Is the water actually that hot?

No. A short only makes the sensor read very high.

Can I run cold washes?

Generally yes, but avoid heated cycles until we check the sensor.

How is E SH different from E oP?

E SH is a shorted sensor circuit, and E oP is an open one.
