UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code Ed09: Current Sensor Error

Ed09 is a current sensor error: at start-up the drive found its current sensor was not working properly and will not start the motor. Power the machine down and up, and call us if Ed09 returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the motor will not start while the sensor check fails, though a power cycle can clear a one-time glitch.

What does UniMac error code Ed09 mean?

Inside the drive of a UniMac UC-series washer-extractor is a circuit that measures how much current flows to the motor. The drive relies on that reading to protect the motor from overload and to control torque. Each time the machine starts up, the drive checks that this sensing circuit reads sensibly. If the check fails, the drive cannot trust its own protection, so it refuses to start the motor and posts Ed09. The message applies to Design 2 and 3 models only. A power cycle sometimes clears a one-time glitch, such as a sensor reading disturbed by an unsteady supply at the instant of power-up. If the code comes straight back, the cause is more likely a failed current sensing circuit, a loose connector at the drive, or a damaged drive board that cannot sense current. The manual also lists unstable supply power at start-up as a cause. This is why the operator steps focus on the power supply and on watching the next start.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the CHM495R family of UniMac UC-series washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the motor drive, for example the UCH020GNF. Only Design 2 and 3 machines show Ed09.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Ed09 on the display right at start-up
  • Motor that will not start at all
  • Code that repeats on every power-up
  • Batch that never gets past the first step

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • A failed current sensing circuit in the drive
  • A loose connector at the drive
  • Unstable supply power at start-up
  • A damaged drive board that cannot sense current

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Ed09 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A power conditioner or generator feeding the laundry that delivers unstable voltage while the drive starts
  • A drive board contaminated by lint, damp air or condensation that offsets the current reading
  • A sensor connector inside the drive that has worked loose from vibration over time

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Power the machine down and up, which is the maker's operator step.
  2. Make sure the washer is on a steady supply and nothing else is overloading its circuit.
  3. Start a cycle and watch for the code at start-up.
  4. If Ed09 returns, note whether it appears on every start or only some, and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code Ed09

  1. Read the code and ask whether it appears at every power-up or only after a power event.
  2. Check supply stability at the disconnect, including voltage while other machines start.
  3. With power locked out, inspect the drive connectors and boards for looseness, lint, moisture or heat marks.
  4. Compare the idle current reading with the drive's expected value if the service tool shows it.
  5. Replace the drive board only after supply and connections are checked.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The drive area has live line voltage and capacitors that stay charged after power-off.
  • A current sensor reading can only be judged with the service tool and the maker's expected values.
  • Unstable supply problems have to be traced with a recording meter, not by guessing.

Ed09Questions about UniMac error code Ed09
Can I start the motor anyway?

No. The drive blocks it on purpose, because it cannot protect the motor without a working current reading.

Does a power cycle fix it?

Sometimes, when the cause was a one-time glitch. A repeat means a real problem in the drive or its supply.

Is Ed09 the same as Ed05?

No. Ed05 means too much current was seen. Ed09 means the current reading itself cannot be trusted.
