UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E tE: Max Water Temperature
E tE means the control sensed water hotter than its upper limit, so it stops or limits heating. Switch the machine off, let the drum cool before opening the door, and call us if the code returns.
High: possible uncontrolled heating of tub water, so the machine should not run until the cause is found.

What does UniMac error code E tE mean?
On a UniMac QN washer-extractor the control reads the tub water temperature through a sensor and compares it with a ceiling built into the program. During a heated fill or a hot-water wash, the reading should rise toward the cycle setpoint and level off. If the reading goes past the maximum, the control cannot tell whether the water is truly that hot or the sensor is misreporting, and either way continuing is unsafe for the linens and for the person who opens the door. It therefore shuts off heating or stops the step and posts E tE. The manual lists four possibilities: a water temperature sensor that reads wrong and hides the real heat, a heating contactor that sticks closed and keeps the element powered, incoming hot water that arrives hotter than the control allows, and a heat output on the control that stays switched on. Because the tub can hold very hot water, treat this as a message to let the machine cool first and investigate second. Never open the door onto a hot drum or reach into standing water.
Affected models and control systems
The message belongs to the CHM1792C family of UniMac QN washer-extractors, the 20 to 100 lb front-end control, for example the UCA020QN. Steam, electric and hot-water-fed machines differ in how heat is supplied, so the likely cause varies with how your washer is plumbed.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E tE on the display and the cycle halted
- Water in the drum noticeably hotter than usual
- Steam or heat coming from the door area
- Linens that shrink or discolor after a hot wash
Possible causes
Listed in UniMac's documentation
- A water temperature sensor that reads wrong and hides the real heat
- A heating contactor that sticks closed and keeps the element powered
- Incoming hot water that arrives hotter than the control allows
- A heat output on the control that stays switched on
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E tE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A building hot water heater or mixing valve set well above the temperature the wash programs expect
- A steam supply valve that leaks by and heats the tub while the washer is idle
- A sensor probe whose wiring has shorted, which makes a normal temperature look excessive
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at its control and let it cool.
- Do not open the door until the drum and water have cooled.
- If you can do so safely, check the building hot water setting and note the temperature at a nearby tap.
- Keep wet linens, mops and hands away from the machine. If E tE returns, note which cycle and step it appeared in for the service call.
How a technician diagnoses error code E tE
- Read the code and note the cycle step, water level and fill type when it appeared.
- Measure the actual tub water temperature with a thermometer and compare it with the displayed value.
- Test the temperature sensor resistance against the maker's table at a known temperature.
- Check the heating contactor or steam valve for a stuck-on condition with the power locked out.
- Inspect the control output for the heat circuit before replacing any part.
- Heating contactors and elements carry live 208 to 240 V or more, and testing them means working behind the panels.
- A stuck-on heat source can keep scalding water in the tub, so the cause must be proven before anyone opens the machine.
- Reading and comparing sensor values needs the service tools and the maker's temperature tables.

Is the water really that hot?
It may be. The control cannot always tell a true overheat from a bad sensor, so assume the water is hot until measured.
Can I keep washing?
Not until it is checked. A stuck heat source can keep heating even with the cycle stopped.
Will it clear by itself?
Switching off and cooling removes the message, but if the cause is a sticking contactor or sensor it will return.
