UniMac Washer-Extractor Error Code E d 31: Overload Current Detection

E d 31 means the drive on a UniMac QN washer-extractor saw motor current climb into the overload range and stopped the cycle. Check that you are not overloading the drum, switch off to reset, and call us if it returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the drive trips the cycle, but the cause is often load or drag that is easy to check.

What does UniMac error code E d 31 mean?

E d 31 is the overload current detection error on a UniMac QN washer-extractor such as the UCA020QN. The drive measures how much current the motor draws while it moves the drum. A certain amount is normal. When the draw rises into the overload range, the drive does not wait to see what happens. It stops the cycle and displays E d 31.

The first things to look at are mechanical. A drum that does not turn freely, because of dragging bearings, forces the motor to pull more current. A load that is too heavy for the drum does the same. A motor that draws more than normal at spin speed can be the cause as well. Last on the list is a drive board that misjudges the motor current and trips the overload when nothing is wrong.

Turning the washer off at the power control resets the display. The code is milder than the fatal over current codes in the same family, but a repeat still means something is working too hard.

Affected models and control systems

E d 31 is listed for the CHM1792C family washer-extractors, the QN models from 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control and drive board; the manual's example model is the UCA020QN.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The display shows E d 31 during a heavy spin
  • The motor sounds strained as the drum speeds up
  • The drum feels rough when turned by hand with power off
  • The code appears more with large loads

Possible causes

Listed in UniMac's documentation

  • Bearings or a drum that drag and push motor current up
  • A load that is too heavy for the drum
  • A motor drawing more current than normal at spin
  • A drive board that misjudges motor current and trips the overload

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E d 31 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Wet heavy items such as rugs or mop heads that exceed the rated load
  • Bearing seals that have let in water and roughened the rotation
  • Motor winding insulation that has aged and now draws extra current
  • Current sensing on the drive that has drifted out of range

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the washer off at the power control to reset it.
  2. Feel whether the empty drum turns by hand, but only with power off and the drum at rest.
  3. Do not overload the next batch.
  4. If E d 31 returns on a normal load, write down the load type and call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E d 31

  1. Read the code and ask what load was inside.
  2. Lock out the machine and check drum rotation and bearing noise.
  3. Measure motor current during a spin with a normal load.
  4. Test the motor windings for resistance and balance.
  5. Replace bearings or motor if they are the cause, and the drive board only if its current reading is wrong.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Measuring motor current needs a clamp meter on live 208 to 240 V wiring.
  • Worn bearings call for removing the basket assembly, which is heavy work.
  • A drive that misjudges current can only be shown by comparing its reading with a meter.

How error code E d 31 differs from similar codes

E d 31 is the overload detection trip, while E d 23 and E d 24 are the fatal over current shutdowns of the same drive.

E d 31Questions about UniMac error code E d 31
Is E d 31 just a warning?

No. The drive stopped the cycle, so the batch did not finish. It is milder than the fatal codes, but it still needs a cause.

Will smaller loads fix it?

They may, if overloading is the reason. If it still trips, the drum or motor is dragging.

Can I keep washing with the same load size?

Try a lighter load once. If the code appears again, stop and call us.
