IPSO Washer-Extractor Error Code E dr: Drain Not Completing
E dr on an IPSO CHM495R washer-extractor is a drain alarm: the drum did not reach the programmed water level within 15 minutes of a drain step, so the control stopped the cycle. Switch off at the disconnect to clear it and check whether the floor drain or trench is backing up.
Medium: the cycle stops with a wet load, but the cause is often outside the machine.

What does IPSO error code E dr mean?
After a wash step, the control opens the drain valve and watches the water level fall. It expects the drum to reach the programmed level within 15 minutes. If it does not, the control stops the cycle and posts E dr. A tub of heavy, wet linen stays in the drum and the next batch waits. A restricted drain line, a drain valve that does not open, a trench or floor drain that is backed up, or a level sensing problem can be the cause. Powering down clears the alarm, the manual says. In a plant where several machines dump at once, a trench that cannot carry the combined flow can slow the drain even though each machine is fine. Drain-time settings that were shortened by mistake can also turn a slow-but-working drain into an alarm.
Affected models and control systems
CHM495R washer-extractors, 20 to 100 lb, with the front-end control. Other controller generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Water stays in the drum after a drain step
- E dr on the display
- Cycle stalls and the load stays wet
- Floor drain or trench full nearby
Possible causes
Listed in IPSO's documentation
- Restricted drain line
- Drain valve that does not open
- Floor drain or trench backed up
- Level sensing problem
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E dr on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Several machines draining into one trench at the same moment
- Lint or rags in the drain valve body
- Drain valve actuator that is weak or slow
- Level sensor that holds a false high reading
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off at the disconnect to clear the alarm.
- Check whether the floor drain or trench is backing up.
- Let the lock release before opening the door, and expect water in the drum.
- Call us if the machine fails to empty, and note whether other machines drain slowly too.
How a technician diagnoses error code E dr
- Read the code and note whether E dr follows a fast or heavy drain.
- Check the plant drain and trench for backups first.
- Inspect the drain valve for debris and listen for it opening.
- Test the drain valve coil or actuator with a meter.
- Check the level sensor reading at the empty point and review the drain-time setting.
- The drain valve and level sensor wiring connect to live control circuits. Water in the drum and on the floor adds a slip and shock hazard. Settings such as drain time are edited in the machine's own service menu, where a wrong value can hide a real problem.

Is it safe to open the door with water inside?
Wait for the lock to release and expect water to spill. Do not force the door.
Will E dr clear after a restart?
The message clears, but it returns if the drain is still restricted.
Does E dr mean the drain pump is bad?
Not necessarily. The manual points first at the drain line, the drain valve and the plant drain.
