What does Newco Overheat Error mean?

The Bistro Touch watches the tank temperature and cuts the heater if it gets too hot. When it finds an overheat condition, it stops and shows a Call For Service screen reading Overheat Error. The manual lists three causes: the thermistor has failed, the relay has failed, or the control board has failed. The actions are to replace the thermistor, replace the relay, and replace the control board, the last marked as requiring service. A thermistor that reads low would make the control keep heating, and a relay stuck closed would keep the heater powered, so either could drive the water past its limit. The manual does not say which is more common, so a technician tests each before replacing anything.

Possible causes

Listed in Newco's documentation

  • Relay has failed
  • Control board failure

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Overheat Error on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Thermistor reading lower than the real temperature
  • Tank empty or low while the heater is on
  • Heavy scale insulating the sensor from the water

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the brewer off and unplug it, then let it cool.
  2. Check that the water supply is on and the tank can fill.
  3. Plug in and switch on again to see whether the screen returns.
  4. If Overheat Error comes back, call for service.
  5. Report whether steam or unusual heat came from the brewer.

How a technician diagnoses Overheat Error

  1. Read the screen and confirm Overheat Error.
  2. Check actual water temperature against the thermistor reading.
  3. Test the heater relay for sticking.
  4. Check the control board output to the heater.
  5. Replace the failed part and confirm normal temperature control.
! Leave this to a technician
  • An overheated tank holds scalding water and live heater wiring.
  • The relay switches line voltage and must be tested with a meter.
  • The manual marks board replacement as requiring service.

How Overheat Error differs from similar codes
