What does Rancilio error code W19 mean?

The control opens the boiler filling valve by sending current through a coil, and it monitors that circuit. If the wire to the valve breaks, or a plug comes apart, no current can flow, and the control sees an open circuit. It lists the problem as W19 Broken wire boiler filling valve. The valve cannot open, so the boiler cannot be filled on demand, and the machine may run short of water or refuse to heat. The manual's guidance for valve and sensor problems is to call a technician, and there is no operator step beyond reporting it. The usual reasons are a lead that has broken where it flexes or has been heated, a connector that has loosened, or a coil that has gone open inside. W19 is the open-circuit counterpart of W18, which reports the same valve shorted.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Classe 11 USB and Xcelsius espresso machines. We read the List of errors in the 07/2014 edition of the manual.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • W19 on the display
  • Boiler not filling
  • Pump running but no water reaching the boiler
  • Fill time-out codes such as E01 following

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code W19 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Valve lead broken where it flexes near the boiler
  • Connector loose at the valve
  • Valve coil open inside
  • Board output wire to the valve loose

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the machine off if the boiler will not fill.
  2. Do not pull on wires near the valve.
  3. Check that the water supply is open, so you can tell the technician the supply was fine.
  4. Do not open panels.
  5. Call a technician and tell them the code is W19.

How a technician diagnoses error code W19

  1. Read W19 and the history, including any E01 entries.
  2. Check the valve connector and the board connector.
  3. Test continuity of the wire to the valve.
  4. Measure the valve coil resistance.
  5. Replace the broken lead or the valve.
  6. Run a fill cycle and confirm the boiler fills.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The valve circuit sits beside water and boiler parts.
  • Continuity and coil tests are made on control wiring.
  • The boiler must fill correctly after the repair, or heating may start dry.

How error code W19 differs from similar codes

W18 is the same valve with a short circuit instead of a broken wire.

W19Questions about Rancilio error code W19
What does a broken wire mean for the valve?

No current can reach the valve, so it cannot open and the boiler cannot fill.

Is W19 related to E01?

They can appear together, since a valve that cannot open leads to a fill time-out.

Is W19 the same as W18?

No. W18 is a short circuit on the same valve, and W19 is a broken wire.
